Doughboy knew Tre had no game in that life in that moment, he didn´t oppose to his friend getting himself out and saving himself. Dough was a true friend.

As a father now, this scene takes on a whole new meaning.

That decision single handily saved his own life.

I never took the time to realize the symbolism of Furious using the Chinese medicine balls in this scene almost as a way of communicating with his son. Only when Tre gets out of the car does Furious stop the cyclical swirl of the spheres.

this scene is incredible because I know myself and a lot guys out there were in similar instances when they were young... you and your friends are on their way to do something stupid and you're sitting there thinking about nothing but the consequences. Except we don't all make the choice of just go home... we worry about our friends judging us instead of our future.

What I really loved about this scene isn't that Tre just dutifully listens...he STILL sneaks off to go with Doughboy, Dooky and Monsta to get revenge after Ricky's murder. But the impact of the father is felt in the car...the weight of that presence in his life, the lessons...he realizes this is a life altering thing that's going to happen and not in a good way...and rightfully asks to get out. And Doughboy, to his credit, obliges. Teenagers will test your gangsta no matter how well you raise them. But the idea is, if you raise them right, eventually they make the right decisions BECAUSE of how you raised them. People called it heavy handed and The Wayans unfairly satirized some of it in Don't Be a Menace, but it's true. I've seen this scenario play out far too many times...Black boys with a true fatherly presence staying on the right path and the ones without it straying. It's not complicated.

It's something about the right sax tune in these moments that really drive them home lol

One of those moments... where you define how the rest of your life is going to be. Powerful scene, in a overwhelming powerful movie.

This is why having fathers even in the hood is important. I was Tre, with my father. I went to live with my father in Texas at 14. He was a black man who impacted alot of students as a janitor at my high school.

Furious's parenting does pay off eventually. Earlier he took the the gun from Tre's hand but this would not be enough to stop him from getting inside that car. Because that is the thing, Tre is not a boy anymore. At some point kids grow up and their parents wont be able to fence them. They will make important decisions with or without the blessing of those who raised them. Tre is now a man and therefore a master of his own fate. BUT as we see here, he decided not to go through with it. He gets out of the car and returns home. When he does there is an awkward stare and silence between the father and the son. On one hand Furious is angry at Tre for disobeying him. But he does not berate him knowing that he has grown to be a good man and the cycle of violence in the hood did not get to him. He did a good job as a father. So that is the morale here. While you wont always be able to fence your own child, the values you teach them while they were young will stick with them.

Also I wanna point out that Dough was a good surrogate brother to Tre. He knows he has a chance to get out of that cycle and has a future. Unlike him he is forver committed to the life of being a street gangsta. There is still good left in him but his fate is pretty much sealed.

Situations like this happen everyday. It’s never bad to be the bigger person and walk away from something you know will end bad. 💯 the thing with Tre is he was still down to ride, but knew when to exit. Everyone knew Tre was different even Doughboy knew. The most powerful scene through out the whole movie.

Let me out the ghetto is what Tre was really saying. Dough is the gate keeper acknowledging his boy had what it took to make it out
