Addition and Subtraction of Large Numbers

We know how to add and subtract small numbers, but what about big numbers? Is it complicated? No, not really, but there is a bit of an algorithm to learn. Check this out!

I intend to master calculus and linear algebra, so that I can truly understand physics. I decided to start with the most elementary concepts. So I started with the first simple addition and subtraction tutorial. Sure, I can easily perform these early operations. But we take them so much for granted that we don't think about the concepts behind them. Thanks to Prof Dave, I understand these simple operations on a much more profound level. This will allow me to understand much more complex mathematical concepts on a much deeper level than I would have had I skipped this easy stuff.

can't believe I'm watching this at 24, no math for 8 years and I've forgotten this.

Thank you Professor took 15 years but finally learned subtraction. 🙂

out of all arithmetic, i can say that i had the most use out of adding and subtracting large numbers. oddly enough, even though i didn't do well with multiplication or division, i actually liked the beginning of algebra.

also, I would never say that i hated math... even though it was my weakest skill, I love when I learn what seemed complicated at first. and that is exactly how mathematics seems, complicated at first, and incredibly useful.

Hi, im 18, and i rlly do think my fundamentals are lacking, since i really wanna do better in math, i start with all the basics, and this playlist is very helpful, ive been trying to learn all of them in within a week, hopefully i can master the basic and thus i have better understanding on much more advance maths

23 years old, going back for leaning math, if only i knew that it was that important... Guys do not play with math ! it's literally the basics component of any scientific matter, or even beyond !

Interesting. The method for subtraction you showed is a little different than what I remember from school. If the top number was smaller than the bottom one, what we used to do was mentally add 10 to the top number and then perform the subtraction. After that, to compensate for that 10, we add 1 to the bottom number of the next place (instead of subtracting 1 from the top one, which leads to the same result). Despite probably sounding more complicated, I feel like that's more intuitive, though that's possibly just because it's the system I'm used to. Thinking about it some more, your method does seem to make a lot more logical sense however, in terms of understanding why it works.

Thanks to all these maths videos I've been watching, including yours, my mental math has become so much better.

Im like 24 and just stumbled on this series like "hey, I like watching this guy talk, I don't feel reluctant to watch these lessons like other basic math videos." thx prof d

I dropped out of an inner-city school at 14 and now a bit later in life, i have big regrets over it.
I will be going through these videos to re-educate & test myself on important subjects I missed because its never too late to learn.
Thanks Prof.Dave

I forgot how to do long division and basic math in general :/ I should use calculators less

Interestingly, in my school time I was taught to leave a empty just above the "finish line" for carrying numbers. Not that it matters in addition but it's something I find interesting

Sir your math tutorial is presently covering very basic concepts good for student of 3rd standard..
will you cover the topics like differential equation, calculas etc??

I never understood this back when I learned it in school, but it was so easy now. Thanks!

Do teachers still use the term borrowing as opposed to regrouping?
