No longer a death sentence, HIV care is changing as patients become elderly
Once a death sentence, HIV infection is now a lifelong condition with which you can live a long, healthy life. But as life expectancy of the much stigmatized disease increases, physicians must now grapple with how to care for HIV at the same time as old age.
MultiCare primary care physician Rachel Safran, who has specialized in HIV care for many years, has seen how care has changed. When the sexually-transmitted disease first arose in the 1980s and long afterward, patients would typically not receive treatment until their immune system showed signs of damage. Medications were not terribly effective and often were toxic, she said.
“HIV quite honestly it was a death sentence in the 80s and 90s and people didn’t expect to live very long. But now people living with HIV can lead a totally normal life,” she said.
Because of this improved treatment, HIV infection now rarely develops into AIDS – a disease that develops from the human immunodeficiency virus and was the cause of high rates of mortality for patients last century.

Fijians. I couldn't hear the word right. I am assuming your video represents only Fijians. That got lost in the intro. I thought you were just a child giving some false or absent stats. But then I read the transcript and saw Fijians (Ppl from Fiji affected/infected with HIV.
Washington dept of health? Hold on. I'm confused. Where is this? Fiji or usa? What is the relation between Fiji & the usa in this case?

Bluetooth = sharing needles? I don't think that is a good word for sharing needles. 'Can & String? " maybe. But, " I GOT HIV FROM BLUETOOTH. " How does that sound to you? Hmm, an AI generated voice. Does one suppose the AI can answer that meaningfully.

Obfuscating content. That's not really going to help people in need of simplistic data by confusing them.

Since the vid to me feels all over the place I'd like to add some data that will help ease stigmatization, decrease infection rates, decrease bullying & harassment & SAVE children THAT may likeky become orphans or HIV+ orphans. THAT is that HIV is on the RISE in the heterosexuals. It is fact that families in developing countries have many children. (it almost seems as if every man I know in developing countries has 9 children. We often try to make conversation light and simple with a bit of humour. But the message comes across. Just one case of 9 HIV+ children is 11 to many (incl the initial parent infection & partner infection).
The key instrument in prevention here and all prevention is awareness, education & heakthy practices,
