3:12 I think he did that on purpose so as not to personally form a bond with Chihiro because he knew right off the bat that Chihiro is the kind of guy that wouldn't leave a friend behind like he had to do with his squad when it really matters.
And this was exactly what happened in the latest chapter where Chihiro knew that the best course of action was to take the fight outside and split up, but he still wanted to endure for Youji and Hakuri... It is very subtle but Youji calls him Chihiro with a serious tone for the first time and then gives him the push he needs to leave.

Youji was just looking out for Chihiro by refusing to acknowledge him before, basically. You also have to remember that people he has spent the last half decade with were killed and put on display for him to see, I think under the goofy veil he's very calculated and understands how to control his emotions very well. And this makes sense since he fought in the war and has experienced a lot.

I think it's too early to try and analyze him as a character.

Could definitely see yoji Uruha being the enchanted sword mentor as well as the other enchanted sword users Chihiro needs to ascend to the next level. All giving their own view of knowledge of the blade. Kind of reminds me of Ichigo and the Zero division.
