The lady who used to lower the basket was named Parmina. I remember her. She lived up on the top floor and couldnt walk due to health reasons. She would throw down a list and money to any kid walking by who would agree to go to the corner store for her. Then she woukd lower her basket on a long string and pull up her groceries. Then she would throw down a tip for the kid that did her shopping. This was in the 1970's.

This is an absolutely amazing video. Not too many old timers around who grew up in the North End. Please make more and as many as you can. This is literally preserving history. Priceless footage

In 1966. I would take the pushcarts from under the expressway to the open market on the weekend

The North End is my favorite Italian neighborhood anywhere. This is really well done!

Good friends of mine, the Biasiucci’s, lived down on Hanover St. in the 50’s & 60’s. I lived in Roxbury in the 60’s & 70’s, and we used to go shopping at the open air market at Haymarket. My favorite restaurant was the European on Hanover. As a red headed Irishman, I always felt safe in the North End 🤌🏼

Love this! Reminds me of all the people I grew up with from the old country, Aragona, province of Agrigento on Sicily. Wonderful memories.

When my parents said we were going to shop I could hardly wait to get to the corner of of Salem St to get a square piece of pizza from the old man pushing the doll cartridge. My brother and I would eat while we
Played with the snails outside Giufres’ fish market. I met Spin in the pizza shop on Blackstone street early on a Saturday morning. We met and talked like we were old friends. It used to marvel me with his age, energy and his personality. After pizza at 8:00 in the morning I would stop up and down the street and hit Joey O, s. Bought meat cheese and cc’s at Al Capone, Harry D’Orsi’ and beef at United. I miss how they used to hawk for sales. We would party in Boston until last call and then go to the North End to eat. Back then it was alive as if it was
Mid afternoon.remember Circle Pizza. This all started when I was three years old and now I’m, we’ll, enough of that. I could go on and on and on but for those of you who only know what you hear I wish you were then. I wouldn’t change a thing. With tears…CIAO..!!

Very fun & interesting info about simpler times. Similar to certain areas in NJ, & I would assume NY & Philly.

Stationed at USCG base Boston " North End " 1965 '66, an old brick building on the harbor . Loved to walk the city when off duty and point to Charlestown Navy Yard across the Bay when tourists came looking for the USS Constitution . Very fond memories - like " Spin " & "Joey " I'm 77 yrs old now .
