My kiddo is 9 now. I always say I have homeschooled her since birth. But the year that she would have started kindergarten here our local newspaper put out this article about the school district. It said that with our kids entering kindergarten 40% of the kids could not recognize the first letter of their first name. Not even all the letters, they couldn't even tell you what letter their first name started with. At that time my kiddo was starting to read and had known all the letters. capital and lower case, since she was 18 months old. She was also 3 years ahead in math abilities. I kept thinking she would be in a kinder class of 30 kids and 12 of them wouldn't even know one single letter. And what would she be doing in a class. Certainly not continuing to learn to read. She would be in 3rd grade now still in a class learning to read fluently. Over the summer she tested at a 10th grade reading level. She is actually doing high school level classes at home, 4 different science classes at the same time, Life science, Environmental science, Marine Biology, and Vet Science, because she loves science so much. In school she would be doing general 3rd grade mixed science a couple times a week with kids still learning to read.

I feel like we have so much in common, I’m so glad I just came across your channel. We are also a secular homeschooling family and I totally agree that we are seriously lacking in representation in the homeschool world! That’s part of why I started my channel. Also one of the biggest reasons we chose to homeschool was because my oldest is also ahead of where she should be for her age and I want her to be able to go at a pace that’s best for her, not the rest of a class of 30. 💜

Been homeschooling about 9 years now, four kids.
We don't have a dedicated learning space, they do their work all over the house. We have supplies in cupboards In the dining room.
We don't use a bought curriculum, we use books, and I make curriculum for them based on their interests.
I also don't schedule. My kids have a weekly list of things they can choose from, they have to do a minimum of 3 a day and aim to have it finished by the end of the week.

I am a little late to this video and your channel but I really wish I had found it so much sooner! I have been homeschooling since the start of the pandemic and so this is my second full year homeschooling my kiddos! The stress is real! So many people do not understand why I am doing this and think my children will fall behind. Because of this I find myself second guessing EVERYTHING! Thank you for this amazing advice!

Ok my tips.
1- deschool. Especially if you're taking your kids out of public school. The recommendation is one month for each year you were at school.
2- listen to Julie Bogart's podcast or read her book The brave learner, she knows her sh!t and has a lot of wisdom and empowerment for you
3- focused attention time is better than an hour of lesson time when they are just not feeling it. Focused attention time is childs age plus one minute
So yeah, for my eight year old sometimes the lesson is only nine minutes. Guess what, she'll take what she learns in that nine minutes more than she would if I was forcing her to spend twenty minutes on it.
4- no matter how much you yell, beg, bribe, if they aren't interested, they aren't interested, move on to something else, let them have a break, whatever.
5- you don't need expensive curriculum to homeschool well, you can use books you already have or the library, videos, discussions etc to teach plenty. There are also plenty of free online resources.
6- kids are learning all. The. Time. Just because they might not be doing a page in the workbook or any traditional school one day or even five days, it doesn't mean they aren't learning.
7- if you do use curriculum, remember you're not tied to it. If it's not working it's ok to take a break or try something different.
8- you don't have to start first thing in the morning. We start around 1:30 because that's when we are all at our most productive.
9- kids learn better when they are ready. My 10 year old didn't start reading till she was 7, she's read the Harry Potter series twice and all the lord of the rings books. She has a book wherever she goes.
10- don't compare your homeschool to anyone else's.
11- you can use a schedule, a routine, a list of options like I do or just go with the flow. Do what works for you.
12-always remember you're their mother first, their teacher second. . Use that to guide your decisions.

Unfortunately, I ordered kinder language arts and math from the good and the beautiful to start my daughter this year and its Christian based so I’ll have to do a lot of…rewording things to get a secular lesson communicated.🤦‍♀️
Glad I found your channel for tips on future curriculum. 🥰

I never cared what anyone says about my choices for my kids. They are mine for a reason. I never will prepare a response other than, "freedom to actually raise my children".

Good morning, is there a way you could send me a link on how you used the MCT language arts curriculum Poodle series? I bit the bullet & purchased it for my first grader. It seems less intimidating than logic of English but I wanted to know how you went over it with your kids without jumping from place to place.

Don't know if this helps for science, but as a 4th to 8th grade teacher we used FOSS kits for science a lot.

Socialization is difficult when you have both a boy and girl lol I have a 8 year old girl and she is a Girl Scout so she had her friends through that but my five year old son says he wants a friend that’s a boy. He is in martial arts but I don’t think he is building that friendship since they are only 30 min classes. I also suck at socializing with adults lol

I tend to piece multiple things together and plan by each quarter, taking a week or 2 off after the quarter to prepare for the next one and make changes if needed.
