Vibram soles wear down in less than a year for me. Of course most big brands offer a resole but you'll need to be without the boots for a few weeks if shipping them off. Plus the cost is quite a lot at £65 plus shipping either way and extra if the rand needs replacing at £15 or £20 depending on if its a low or high rand. Thats what Altberg charges. Just ordered some Hanwags as I don't want to be without boots and my current boots are slippy now they've lost the treads grip. I did consider Crispi but they seem more of a hunting boot.

I was finding it hard to find boots in a wide fitting in my size. Plus never anything in the sales in my size.

I didn't even wear them in the summer so its less than a year but I'm ok with replacing them once a year.

My current boots are Sympatex lined and they're still waterproof one year later and I've walked in streams and plenty of wet grass. My new boots are gore-tex but Sympatex definitely works. I could have just ordered another pair of Altberg Kisdon G fit but wanted to try something different this time. They've updated the Kisdon for next year to full grain leather instead of Nubuck. They use 2.6mm thick leather and the tounge is one piece combined with the upper as in its not an extra section sewn in. I'm yet to find any other boot makers doing this. Would definitely add to making the boots more waterproof and I can't feel no discomfort from it.
The sole is the same as found on the Lowa tibet boot and its called the Vibram Masai. I always wear the outer edges down first and once the tread has worn flat the boots have no grip. Theres a slight split on the upper outer edge by where my toes bend. It looks to be only on the surface but could be a sign that it may split right through so another reason to get new boots rather than a re-sole.
I may still get them re-soled once I have a second pair of boots to wear.

I picked up the insulated version of the Guide boot half off. Wanted a spring boot, but could not pass that deal up.

I have two pair of Crispi boots. My Wildrocks are two years old and look like new. My Dakotas on the other hand are very disappointing. The boots were properly cared for, but the leather cracked, the toe started delaminating, stitching started coming undone and Crispi wouldn't honor their warranty. Now one of the nylon eyelets has broken. A lot of money for boots that don't go much over a year...

Are they stiff enough to give strong support in the steep stuff? How about compared to the Kenetreks?

Wait... 3-5 years out of boots that cost nearly $500?! I have a pair of $200 boots that lasted me 5 years and I would still hike in if the climate was dry... why pay $500?
