Drake Hogestyn was an American actor widely recognized for his long-running portrayal of John Black on the soap opera Days of Our Lives. Born on September 29, 1953, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Hogestyn’s early life seemed far removed from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. He attended North Side High School before receiving a baseball scholarship to the University of South Florida, where he pursued pre-dentistry studies. He graduated with a double major in microbiology and applied sciences, showcasing his academic prowess alongside his athletic abilities. Baseball was his first career pursuit, and he was drafted by both the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees. Hogestyn ultimately signed with the Yankees and played as a third baseman in one of their farm teams until an injury in 1977 abruptly ended his promising sports career.
Undeterred by this setback, Hogestyn found a new passion: acting. His entry into the world of entertainment was unconventional yet promising. He participated in a Columbia Pictures talent search, which selected him from a pool of 75,000 participants. This led to his first notable role in the television series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Although his early acting career consisted of minor roles, including a part in the 1980s show Otherworld, his big break came when he joined the cast of Days of Our Lives in 1986.
