Comparing Focal Lengths for Talking Head Videos

Not every lens is the same. Depending on what focal length you use, it will change the shape of your face. This may or may not matter too much to you, but it is good to be aware of the effects the focal length has on your image.

I have been looking for exactly this kind of information for ages. Thank you

It would be interested to get the actual camera distances based on the focal length.

Best explanation and illustration of focal length I’ve seen so far. 👍🏻

This really helps. I have a 24-70 on an APS-C sensor and have been using 50mm for my corp interviews. I am adding a wider lens now for my vlogging to get better audio off the attached mic. Thanks for making this vid.

Hay man great review and test on these lenses. The 28mm looks very good, at least to me. You're right it looks more natural to the eye. and yes 50mm you on point with it. We need these man keep make'n grand vidz as they are a strong educational tool. Plus you me and the others who make these instructionals beats listening to a classroom instructor who never used the equipment. You on point man...

Nice video around 2:45 you talked about the 50mm lens and space, how many feets was the lens away from you 5ft or 6ft

It would help if you let us know the distance required (camera to head) for the other lenses in order to get a sense of what space we need

Great video man but it's confusing when you say "focal length". Consider saying "focal length equivalent" and how it corresponds to your sensor. Thank you.

Thanks for making this video. Exactly what I was looking for. The look is really nice. What kind of colour profile are you using. It is graded, right?

Great video Marcos!... Thank you!
One question please. If i buy a Canon RP with a 50mm for talking head, how far should i put the camera?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my Egnlish; i'm still learning

APS-C is not a crop factor of 1.5x on all cameras - it's actually 1.6x for all canon aps-c cameras. If someone is calculating focal length for the wrong crop factor and "pulling tape" to get it exact they're going to end up with soft focus which will become more and more evident as you get into longer telephoto lenses because instead of a 500mm becoming 750mm it becomes 800mm. The rest of the info and the comparison was super valuable! I just think it's important to specify that this is the case for people who are just learning how to use their cameras through watching youtube videos.

Hi, thanks for the videos, it has helped me a lot to understand how to make videos. I'm a hairdresser and I'm going to start recording video lessons, we'll use two DSLR canon SL2, one to film the whole complete space (me, the model and assistant) and for that purpose what canon lens tells me? the second camera will be used to film only the head of the model to better show how I am cutting the hair of the same, and for this camera what lens tells me? in short, a lens to film three people and another lens to just to film the model's head. It does not have to be lenses with good focus because the background of the scene is totally white. I need good, inexpensive lenses to film my course.

So how do you (if possible) show more of the scene and it ACTUALLY look good?? At what point does it look good to actually show the rest of the body? Been trying to figure this out forever but perhaps I just can't because I don't have a lens with a focal length below 28mm?? Thanks to anyone who sees this and replies!

Marcos will a 50mm work in a 10 feet by 10 feet room? So in essence, your favorite is a 50mm lens but displays a 75mm focal length with the crop factor, correct?

How many ft. further away from yourself did you have to keep the camera when it was attached to a 50mm lens(75mm because of the crop factor)?
