Micheal Martin has welcomed the arrival of Dubai cops here working with gardai on jailing the Kinahan gang kingpins.
The Tanaiste is Minister for Foreign Affairs as well and officials in his department are working behind the scenes - along with Justice Department officials and the gardai - to bring Daniel Kinahan and his associates back to Ireland to face prosecution.
One source close to Mr Martin said: "We all want to see them back here to see them face justice on home soil."
Mr Martin was addressing the Global Ireland Summit in Dublin Castle as host and one of the keynote speakers.
Speaking to the Irish Mirror on the fringes of the Summit, he addressed our questions on the possible extradition of the Kinahans home to face prosecutions in our courts.
It is known that the gardai are currently working on linking the drug gang to the record €157million cocaine seizure from the MV Matthew that ran aground off the east coast a few weeks ago.
Mr Martin said: "I think again these are operational matters, but there are ongoing works always between police forces across the globe to combat criminality generally.
"People information, people share intelligence and I welcome the cooperation between our police forces and police forces in other jurisdictions including the UAE, in respect of the general aim and objective of countries to try and clamp down on criminal activity."
He added: "This is primarily a Justice and police-led one, so we don’t get involved in operational, but like every other aspect of Irish life, our embassies and offices facilitate the conduct of international engagement more generally.
"But this is fundamentally one police force to another."
An official close to Mr Martin said: "When any assistance is needed from Foreign Affairs in terms of facilitating our people there in getting the Kinahans to Ireland, whether they want it or not obviously, everything will be done to make that happen."
