Shostakovich on a period xylophone

Since the letter ‘X’ is gaining a bit of notoriety these days, we thought we’d bring out the Xylophone - here’s one by Deagan, made from Honduras Rosewood in Chicago in approx 1920. Adrian Bending plays a bit of Symphony No.4 by Shostakovich (not a composer you’ll hear us play usually!) with old style rosewood sticks. Shostakovich died on this day 48 years ago. Seeing a 20th-century instrument described as a "period" instrument is rather unsettling to me. Incidentally, why does my back hurt, and why do I have a sudden urge to shoo away the kids playing on my lawn?

There’s such a beauty to the old deagen models. Modern instruments just don’t replicate that old almost bouncy xylo sound

This music was written for a four-row "continental" xylophone. Not for the two-row Deagan, which differs little in timbre from modern rosewood xylophones.

Does this mean it's being played on a period-correct (1930s) Xylophone, or on a much older OAE xylophone?

How is it different from a modern xylophone? It sounds the same to my ears

This is not period. It’s just vintage or contemporaneous. Weird and wholly incorrect way to describe an instrument that still exists in its modern form. It’s just a difference in material.

Modern instruments cannot reproduce these vintage tones. Actually, they probably can. I was just sayin' stuff on the internet.
