How Much Do Underwater Welders Get Paid?

How much do Underwater Welders actually get paid?

This is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. You may be operating on an oil rig in the north sea one month and then salvaging a shipwreck hundreds of metres underwater the next.

All of this comes with huge risks from underwater explosions, electric shocks, decompression sickness to drowning. Many publications and injury law firms state the death rate in the job is a whopping 15%.

It’s not an easy job to get either, often requiring you to be an apprentice welder for years, gaining experience in the industry and then completing a series of diving certifications. All of this will take anywhere from around 4 to 8 years to complete.

This seems absurdly high but if the real number is anything close to this then it’s a job reserved for those with huge Kahooners.

So with all this risk to life, you must be getting paid a fortune right?

Well not really, in the UK the average salary for an underwater welder is around £70,000 a year with more experienced welders making up to around £120,000. That’s definitely not a bad salary but not so sure it’s worth the risks, but what do you think?

They showed me first hand, With pay stubs and proof. Theyll live on a oil rig for 3 weeks and leave with a 23k pay check. 3 weeks. Depends on the expirence and welds they have to do🤷🏽‍♂️ Im only 19 and make around 3k a week take home(i work for myself) . Welding is where its at . All types of welding

To be in the top 10% wealthiest earners on the UK you would have to earn £63, 000 per year, so really 70-120k is pretty damn good

They only make that much per year because they take contracts that last a few weeks to a few months and walk out with enough money to sit cozy for the year or at least the next few months. It’s dangerous and exhausting work and you’re constantly on call, but the pay is nothing to scoff at. Some competitive contracts are enough for a whole year’s pay, the only thing you’d need to do in your well earned vacation at that point is go in for recertification because I think some only last 6 months to a year.

My buddies dad in 1970 worked on oil rigs welding underwater. He was making $55, 000 a year and 1974. Before his death, he taught deep-sea diving/welding to apprentices in the 80s they were making well over 150, 000. I think the pound if I’m not mistaken is two times the American dollar but still $100, 000 a year they need to come to America and work for Shelle for mobile and make real money.

I went to school for this and it was the hardest job I ever had, so dangerous and I was making $13 per hour. But we did get paid while we sleep. But I didn't stick around in this very long. I had to pay $3, 500 for my own Kirby dive hat and school was about $18, 000. I graduated top of my class and $13 an hour. Oh and I had a cheating girlfriend at that time so it made it that much better.

Why is the film still a video of TIG welding, when electrode welding is done underwater? The author probably doesn't know anything about what he's talking about, and he posted it to go viral. Thats all.
