Hamas leader's death might be key to moving forward with ceasefire in Gaza war, says expert

Palestinian militant group Hamas confirmed on Wednesday (Jul 31) that its leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an attack in Iran capital Tehran. Hamas described the strike as a severe escalation that would not achieve its goal, saying the assassination would not go unanswered. Simon Frankel Pratt, lecturer of political science at the University of Melbourne, tells CNA’s Asia Now that Haniyeh’s death is “a very big deal" but Hamas likely does not have the capacity to escalate the Gaza war further in retaliation. He also says Haniyeh’s death may turn out to be instrumental in moving forward with a ceasefire.

What total nonsense - every respectable analyst out there agrees that Netanyahu has since day 1 been the main obstacle to securing a cease fire and the release of the hostages. It is not in his own political interests.

Ismail Haniyeh was using the hostages negotiations for his agenda his attention not to release the hostages. Also, Haniyeh was using the Palestine’s case to obtain money from around the world.

What talks? You must be joking if you think assassinating the second strongest guy in Hezbollah and the Leader of the poitical wing of Hamas were preventing a ceasefire- hostage exchange deal😂.

People do not understand this. This will only escalate things. Israel is just mad thinking that this will end the war. Just think abpout it, he was assasinated in Iran! There is a real underestimation of the power and capacity of Hamas.

Dumbest analysis Ive heard so far. This will escalate the situation in the region and completely remove any possibility of a ceasefire. Exactly what Netanyahu wants.

Kid logic. In fact killing Hamas leader had derailed any prospect of a ceasefire.
Speaker's own imagination of Hamas intentions.

CNA can you please do some due diligence on the speaker invited. If the speaker said some controversial things and speaker is not really ‘expert’, please don’t put this controversial point as title!

What an absurd opinion that the cowardly killing would mean one step closer to ceasefire
