This is how me and my grandfather laid lawns in the 90s up in Northern Canada. People, to this day, still slow down when driving by to just look at what we created...

pull a long ladder with a rope is sooo much faster than a mini level.sorts any low or high spots with ease.ive found putting 2 bags of jacks on top of a 10ft ladder is about the right weight.3 swoops and youd be done

Coming on
I brought one of those rakes last month, works great. Length I found was fine but I can also see why you were considering to cut it down.

Thanks for info on field compost, was travelling from Yorkshire down to that area, gave them a ring, very accommodating and was able to pick up some field 4 from them directly. Thanks for recommending them. Looks like great stuff

The short level doesn't make sense until you see it in action. A longer one will cause you to stretch and so tilt your knees cause in 2 hollows every time you move position. As always top tips in a great video.

Daniel why don’t you use a roller . Would that not be easier rather than “heeling” the soil in ?

Dan, I take my hat of to you for using that level. Surely it would easier and quicker to use a longer level or long bit of 4 by 2? Can't wait to see this one develop.

Could it be easier to tape the level to the back of the spikes on your rake and use the rake’s flat edge to smooth the soil and still be able to see the level’s bubble and keep it horizontal?. On your feet and not ruining your knees.

I’ve just done exact same today with the seed I ordered from you, it’s just a small section of border I wanted to convert to lawn, depending on the result I may do a complete lawn next season. I notice the road passes the end of the lawn there, do any cars not drift on to the lawn there? Would it be better to add a blocks as there is around the rest of the lawn.

If you use the back of that rake, it works the same as the spirit level and means you don’t need to be on your knees

Nice vid Dan. Only thing I do different is using a longer level, Stanley do a great one with two hand cut outs, makes life easy when screeding. The roughneck rake is my favourite also. The march of the Penguins is a must :) No need for rollers as you say, well unless the area is huge but most UK lawns are not.

Any advise on a 3 in 1 mower, scarifier and verti cutter? Don’t really have room for loads of equipment in the shed.

fascinating as come you use heels and not a water filled roller that you can control the weight of? say for example you are 13 stone thats 75kg compacted on your heels, you could easily fill a roller with50 or 60kg of water and do the light compact with a roller instead no?

What are your thoughts on drag mats for levelling?

Hi Dan, Love your videos.
Having seen the results of your work, I purchased a vericutter and have followed your recent lawn preparations before winter. I cut the lawn quite short and have discovered I was mowing it too long. The result was long horizontal grasses which I had to cut even shorter but now down to approximately 1/2 inch. Although the grass is slowly greening up, I am left with a lot of brown grass and some bare patches where there was mostly moss. I have also over seeded but even this is disappointing with little germination.
Will this recover before winter sets in or should I treat the lawn with fertilizer?
I started this just under two weeks ago.
Thanks.
Colin

Great work as usual. Any reason why you don’t use a lawn roller that can be filled with water
I’m sure you have your reasons just asking.👍🏻

Any decent forums/groups out there for lawn care?
I’ve done a few reseeds over the years before it was available to view on YouTube etc.
I’ve given up on my lawn now as it needs a mowing edge but it’s on a slope with a curve.
Anyone advise on where I can post pics/get help?
Thanks. 😊

Use a longer wooden plank, your done much faster. Hold it against a door frame to see if the plank is leveled. 🙂
