Well I started on my 74th birthday back in September but couldn't really give it the attention it deserved until my official retirement date which was Friday.

I'll see how it goes.

Like I always tell my students: the ONLY way to learn to program… is to program. That's why I spend as little time as possible with "theory" type stuff. That sort of thing can come later on. Like, step 1 should be "learn just enough to make your first Thing". Experiment. Be delighted when things blow up in your face. Solve the problems.

Doing is learning. Programming is not like math; it's like shop class or art class.

I have been trying to learn to code for couple of months. At first it was fun but as it got complex I grew frustrated, boredom grew so higher that i quit! But now I will take your advise and I will start again with different perspective. You may not read this but I guess in some way you have changed my life!
thank you.

Learning to code can be hard. And it requires a lot of interest in the tech field. But i belive after a while it just becomes natural. Woulden't you agree?

Hi, Sunday afternoon and I've just watched your video. Disabled and 54 yrs old and feel it's time to go in the direction of coding, can't use my body so I'll use my mind....hopefully 🙂

This is the best advice he just gave. After giving up on learning Javascript objects recently, after years of trying, I decided (for some reason) to convert an old web page of mine (a calculator) to a javascript object, and it worked first time! And it changed my view on Javascript programming totally. All the tutorials had started out with the 4 ways to make an Object, I'd be dead meat by #4, ...but just making ONE for my own project, line by line carefully, I suddenly knew what I was doing. "this, getters, and setters" suddenly made sense. I couldn't believe it. Applying a tutorial to your own small project is how to learn. You can't learn deeply, from duplicating a tutorial project, I change all the variable names to ones I like, I add small features I like. Don't duplicate tutorials, just go similar in your own code.

starting your own project is the key, just watched this and im applying it to a program I want to make from a simple run.bat app launcher I made.

The secret is that once you start more and more projects you'll actually be learning rather than replicating what's in a tutorial.

this is so true...I did tutorials and read books for a year switching from language to language, framework to framework, with nothing to show for it (just learning theory). I finally got over my fear and took the plunge to start my own projects.

It kicked my butt...but you know what? I learned more in the course of 3 months doing two of my own projects than i did over the course of that entire year. Sure the year of learning helped me immensely, but the point is I would have been SO MUCH FARTHER ahead if I just actually did my own projects much much sooner.

I have been using a udemy course to learn. As I go through I have been taking the knowledge that I learn and slowly trying to build a functional/aesthetic website. It seems to be working! I'm glad I stumbled across you on YouTube though, because i was really eager and was about to start doing some course collecting and setting myself up for failure. Thanks for the videos!

You always combine general wisdom with practical advice, and that's one of my favorite things about your channel. 😊
Another way of getting project ideas: look at the companies or organizations you'd like to work at. Pick one of their products that fascinates you and try to code a simplified version of that product. You need to have a few hello-world-projects done before you tackle something like that, but I think the end result is worth it. You'll have something that's:
1. practical,
2. worthy to be included in your portfolio,
3. valuable because of everything you learned during the project, and, of course,
4. something you'll be proud of (aren't we all more proud of and chatty about the obstacles we overcome than about the obstacles we avoided? 😊)

Biggest mistake I made was to not immediately start my own project even if it was a bit over my head.

So disappointed. I was hoping for the best way to learn to code in 2022. I want to be ahead of the curve.

You really provide the best content which is really useful for young programmers. I am in software industry for more than 5 years and I really wish someone like you were there to teach about programming at my career starting. Anyway it is still helpful for everyone. Thanks a lot for your videos. Keep up the good work.

Great video Andy! I am learning the basics now. Finishing up with CSS after a week of HTML. It still gets slightly confusing from time to time, but in general, Learning HTML/CSS was easier than I thought it would be.

For my first learning-based project I’m just going to build myself a simple multipage website. I would like it to incorporate as many HTML/CSS elements as possible. After that I’d like to build just a couple more very simple websites to make sure I’ve got the coding down pat.

I’ll be jumping into JavaScript in a couple weeks and that’s really what I’m nervous about. I have absolutely zero background or experience with coding or computer science but I really need to make a life change and this is my way to do it.

Keep it up with the great videos! When I’m not at my computer coding I’m watching videos in an effort to “immerse“ myself as much as possible.

Thanks again

I liked how in one of your videos you talked about how you need to set a schedule/routine/regime. I used to hate going to the gym. Absolutely dreaded it. I now go 4-5 days a week because I stuck with it and now I have learned to look forward to it. That's the same with coding. Of course it's easier to turn on my computer and start playing a game on Steam that's going to fill me with instant gratification, but if I want to better myself, and actually change my life for the better, I must set a dedicated routine, rather than "Oh i'll code for 3 hours this Sunday, Tuesday, and maybe Wednesday."

Let's go my friends. Who's going to be applying to web dev jobs with me towards the end of 2020?
