Imagine staring at the piano as if it’s a long-lost love that you’re trying to reconnect with, while your fingers hit all the wrong notes

Simple patterns. With subtle complexities. Like nature.

It is also the structure of limericks: “There once was a farmer from Leeds,
Who swallowed a packet of seeds.
It soon came to pass, He was covered with grass,
But has all the tomatoes he needs.” It looks like this structure is the simplest form of telling a story.

In German this is called „musikalischer satz“, I don‘t know the traduction but this is - short phrase + sequence or variation + longer phrase

This is called sentance structure and its used everywjere in music. The first beethoven sonatas are considered in the classical period and use whats called the galant style. Which use rests to seperate out those small themes and make them very elegant and easy to hear. Later as he moves into a romantic style it becomes a bit harder to tell when each motive starts and end that make up the whole sentance.

I love Beethovens early sonatas. Great pieces to learn and play! They take a lot of work though - as they must be played properly and never half heartedly!

Just with those few examples, John O'Conor's exquisite musicianship shines through.

Music nowadays: 2+2 is 4, minus 1 that’s 3

How interesting! Beethoven was a genius who created music from simple structures, 5th symphony, choral theme from 9th symphony... This is the power of a real genius, few composers can do this...

The first sonata is sooo good, I've always loved it as one of my favourite pieces of music ever

This is what all great writers do. It allows people to catch the pattern and comprehend the sequence. It grabs the ears of music literates and beginners. As a kid who grew up in an area where I was the only one listening to this type of stuff, Beethoven (and mozart) allowed my ears to see the notes in my head. I didn't have a piano but I could map out the intervals. Good hearing practice for people who don't have an instrument. This scheme is in everything audible. It naturally occurs especially if you are a teacher or communicator of anything and you want the message to imprint. You copy at least twice and vary up the timing by like 1/64 precision a little bit different each time. We also do this in computer science and electrical circuits and error checking and HAM radio and everything.

Not just Beethoven, all Galant composers. This is described very well by Joseph Riepel.

I love listening to experts who also have passion for their subject.

This simplification, in the most positive meaning of the term, deserves a Prize for something. Musicians and traditional fans of classical music are very often not aware of how intimidating approaching this genre can be to people outside this cultural environment. Well, Beethoven, my man, how is ya doing, papi!

Basic idea + basic idea repeated, then fragments -> cadential. 8 bars Sentence structure

For people who are interested in digging deeper in this topic I would highly recommend to read some W.Caplin: Classical form. The video describes a Sentence (Satz), constructed this way: 4 (Presentation of the motif, very oft made of a 2+2) + 2 (development of the motif) + 2 (cadential clause, which normally has less motif information and a very standard harmonic sequence)

Beethoven was also in favor of achieving the greatest effects with the simplest of means. That's why Beethoven admired the music of Handel so much; as Beethoven himself said.
