DNA molecules are commonly shown as double helix threads. Our 46 chromosomes, however, are not built up entirely of DNA strands. A single cell contains about two metres of straightened-out DNA, which must mean that DNA is packed tightly into cells in order to fit inside the nucleus's limited space. Does this mean that a single cell accommodates 23/46 of these chromosomes, each of which when unwound has a length of around 2m?
