Testing Audi's new quattro ultra all-wheel drive system

When it comes to all-wheel drive, not all systems are created equal.

"They are either reactive," says Graeme Fletcher, "or they are proactive."

Audi's new quattro ultra system takes that foresight to the next level, utilizing a pair of clutches to control the flow of power between the front and rear wheels.

"The system monitors everything from the throttle and steering to the cornering forces up to 100 times a second to determine the best possible power split," Graeme says.

"When all-wheel drive is not needed, both clutches open, which improves fuel economy."

Unlike the norm in all-wheel drive Audis past, quattro ultra is a front-wheel-biased system, which may upset some purists.

But with claimed fuel economy improvements of roughly 0.3 L/100 km in everyday driving, even the purists may be able to get on board.

So now updates: was at Garmisch last weekend, where it was snowy and icy and an quattro ultra A4 was stuck. My B8 Quattro didn't get stuck in the same area of the parking lots. This is not the first time I've seen a stuck Quattro Ultra, either.

I'm worried that quattro ultra is just a watered down version of quattro that makes sales off the coat tails of the audi quattro legacy. If I wanted a car that wasn't full time AWD I could just go buy a Volvo

Meanwhile, quattro ultra feedbacks are finally coming in as winter sets in and it looks like a bust. Even the new Buick AWD passed the three wheel no-grip test, while Audi failed- the very test it used for decades.

And the Quattro Ultra system is NOT AWD! It is an on-demand 4wd system with no variable torque splitting. And there is no way possible a FWD system can be proactive, no matter what Audi's corrupt marketing says. It is FWD that locks to 4WD on demand, nothing more. Mind you, this is the company that brought us Dieselgate and a host of failures of engineering, such as their engine timing components and failing S-tronic transmissions. It's time to stop supporting these companies.

Quattro ultra = crap. Now Audi is in same league with Honda CRV and Nissan Qashqai - shopping cart for ladies.
