Back in the 80s there was something magical about films. It was raw in every sense, and there wasn't too much noise from technology to think of, hence less sophistication. Just humbled down but artistic and detailed hand made effects and props and most important - the actors just acting. The world was more innocent and so were they. The scenes were film shot and not digitally, giving it the soft 80s and 90s aesthetic that even effects can't quite copy today unlless it's a true film camera. Every shot with film is more expensive so it holds more weight and importance. It had soul because it was 99% about telling a story. Not showing off on the next big VFX techniques. Just a purpose to move the viewer purely.

This old movie gives the feel which even modern CGI can't give.

Just got home from a rough, ROUGH day....sat down with a meatball sandwich, turned on the TV, and this was on Cartoon Network....and I couldn't be happier. This movie is absolutely untouchable.

Although the special effects aren’t the greatest compared with today, this movie was so magical, great acting, great story and just so much more heart and soul than 99% of the stuff created today. Plus I love Limahl singing the title song. This is a movie they should definitely do a modern reboot of. I would redo the great title song to with a band like Imagine Dragons singing it.

My favorite movie as a child. Going to rewatch it tomorrow. Crazy, i had no idea Wolfgang Petersen directed this. I just watched Das Boot for the first time the other day and it was one of the best films ive ever seen. So Wolfgang Petersen directs 2 of my all time favorites.

The author of the original novel (on which this movie is based on), was actually against the release of the movie. He was appalled when he saw the finished product he called it a "giant melodrama made out of kitsch, commerce, plush and plastic" and criticised, that the movie was lacking inner logic and the basic messages from his book weren't conveyed in the movie. That's why he wanted to be removed from the credits and he fought the production for a long time to either rename the movie or cancel production, but that was without success.

Do any of y'all remember those statues that laser killed? I had nightmares about that for weeks. I had to sleep upright in case I had to run away-🤣

I remember the day I first saw it. I was sick and tucked in a blanket in the sofa and my dad had rented the VHS for me. I feel so lucky to have been a kid back then.
