How important is the Strait of Malacca?
#shorts #geopolitics #strategy
The Strait of Malacca, situated in South East Asia between the western portions of Malaysia and Indonesia, is one of the most important trade and shipping routes in the world, currently making up the shortest seaborne route between the Far East and the Indian Ocean.
In 2018, an estimated 15.7 million barrels of oil passed through the strait per day, and as of 2016, an estimated 90 percent of crude oil volumes flowing through the South China Sea transited the strait of Malacca, going on to feed energy hungry economies such as China and Japan, making the strait a critical global maritime chokepoint - much like the suez canal.
In the context of global security, the strait has previously been subject to piracy, but now forms a focal point of many states’ security policy, and were it to be blocked, the geopolitical and geoeconomic implications could be greater than the blocking of the Suez Canal in 2021.
As the region’s economies continue to grow, so too will the importance of the Strait of Malacca.
