As the colder weather of winter creeps in, Canada’s housing crisis is heating up.

The Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH) is hosting a national conference in Halifax, as up to 300,000 Canadians either struggle with or risk experiencing homelessness.

As Heidi Petracek explains, while the meeting is looking at success stories and solutions, addressing our country’s growing problem is a daunting task.

The problem is the government needs to put a hold on all immigration until there is no housing crisis.

Halt immigration. Ban foreign ownership altogether. Take care of natural born Canadian citizens before anything else. Done. Solved

With immigration at 500K annually there can't be a housing shortage that would not be responsible government. right FJT.

Homeless. Drugs. Wealth going to the few. We are the epitome of progress.

Guaranteed every NGO and government employee there has never been homeless and in fact enjoys a high paying comfortable existence. Reminds me of a friend who went to narcotics anonymous and none of the counselors had been drug addicts. One must experience to know .

Crack down on the drug dealers including the death penalty, instead of spending money on non sense like bike lanes spend more on rehab, cheap housing and bring less immigrants here. Instead get some of the homeless put in a better situation, cleaned up and put in a living arrangment in return give them a job that youd give to an immigrant and tell them the deal is they have to work one of these jobs. They need to start doing more for actual Canadians instead of forgetting about them. They're the ones who matter most. Majority of these immigrants come, send money back home and invest elsewhere. This doesn't benefit Canada in the long run.

We make a lot of housing but it’s snapped up my foreign investors, chines “home makers”, and greedy Canadians buying investments. We need the government to impose rent control everywhere and make sure that 60% of rentals are affordable to people who work minimal wage.

The only solution right now is bring in 500K -1M immigrants to Canada by next year. Thank you Trudy

This is only a small percentage of the homeless. So many more on couches, cars, and trailers.
Why do we give priority to international students and immigrants? Take care of folks who already live here.

Even though the immigration laws need to be modified (all systems do) simply blaming immigrants when this country and the entire world has enough money to go around is short-sighted. The people in power are greedy. The rich are getting richer on the backs of every single tier below. Take the housing crisis in Alberta. Head in the sand, while paying Manning an insane salary consisting of tax payer$$, to conduct redunant research that leads to 0 funds on frontline of healthcare.
EVERY sector is suffering due to poor resource management.
Inflated baseline rental and home prices are not addressed before the next wave of increases.
There are so many adjacent issues. If people focus alone on immigration we are literally NEVER going to see ourseves out of this mess. It is going to take a multi-system overhaul by an independent body that can take what we already know and action it in the right places.
Think beyond your prejudice for one second.

Winter temperatures are NOW upon housing that becomes available in two years is not a solution for this winter. Are cities able to dismantle "tent" cities and put people up in municipal rec/community centres? Are the hotels/shelters full? Some homeless in Ottawa spent the winter in condo lobbies. Is this going to repeat? Death from cold is far more prevalent than deaths from heat. Tent cities in the winter are a disgrace in Canada.

1, 800 people "working in homelessness" sitting around eating an expensive meal in a huge building....if they solve the homeless problem they wouldn't have a job
