Meritocracy is not what it seems. Either the most capable people are performing roles or they aren't. Pick your poison.

Funny how the people claiming meritocracy is unfair are the same people born upper class in best country in the world.

Meritocracy is so common sense these people have to be genuinely insane.

Meritocracy is literally the ONLY THING that can make society SUCCEED.

And seeing how many diversity hires are put into important positions in industry and government lately, it's not surprising how we got into the current situation.

Many say "There's no meritocracy" as counter to supporting meritocracy.
But that's not a counter. That's the problem. If you obstaculize meritocracy, things go wrong.

The clearest example of true meritocracy are the high standards society use to have for people joining the military or law enforcement. If you met the standards, you got in. That's how things should be. Now they've lower the standards to let physically or mentally weak people in for brownie points or because they're desperate and underfunded.
The fact that the person in charge of the Department of Agriculture is a career politician instead of an experienced farmer is asinine.

In a fair race, everyone has to cross the starting line at the same time

In an equal race, everyone has to cross the finish line at the same time

My family has a leftist tendency, and both of my parents are actual communists. Whenever they talk about meritocracy, it's always so sad because they think the concept itself does harm.

Meritocracy could very well exist here in Brazil, but you can't have it when half of your income is taken at gunpoint by the state mafia.

I heard this a long time ago and I remember it to this day.
"The reason why anyone but the best of the best will always result in the worst of the worst is because, outside of things such as family, and the few most honorable or most skilled who fear no replacement. Is because we pick replacements who are our inferiors. Those beneath us who will not threaten our positions of superiority."

Or another way that I heard.
"A talent hires A talent, because you cannot get better then A talent. B talent hires C talent because there's room to improve and they want to secure their position."

I cant believe we have to discuss the concept of "give the job to the people who are best at it" lmao

My social studies teacher(a communist propaganda spreader) loved to talk about how meritocracy is fake because the world is not perfect(while trying to implement a utopia, go figure)
But the funniest part to me was that when we would debate about that, the ones most vocal against meritocracy were the rich kids
Which makes a lot of sense, if meritocracy was put in place, they wouldnt be able to get a easy high paying job from their parents connections

You see that among shill movie/game critics: "but so many people worked so hard and so long on this thing". Doesn't matter: if the end product is trash, then they failed and their efforts were unfortunately wasted.

A professor of economics, and yes I know don't cite a professor, nevertheless provided me with a useful concept may years ago.

If you were to go outside every day and dig two vast holes in your yard, then refill each hole with the dirt from the other, that would be a great deal of work and very laborious and exhausting. However, no one would pay you a single penny to do it.

If you were to get a job as a night watchman who observes cameras at a desk however, you could sit on your ass for hours relaxing and get paid for it.

His point being, it's not about how hard something is to do. It's about how valuable it is to others. Just because something is very hard for you to do doesn't mean that it's worth anything to other people. It sucks, but the sooner you internalize that, the better off you are going to be.

i think it's funny that people genuinely think an unqualified teenager fresh out of highschool with absolutely 0 job experience should get the same job and pay as a doctor who studied for 8 years, and has like 10 years on the job.

The best way to disprove many of these stupid takes is to look at how people spent their Stimulus money during The Coof. Some people used them to buy food, some people used them to pay bills, some used to pay rent, and most of them used the money to buy luxury goods that they didn't need. When everyone is given the same chance and a level playing field, a lot of people will just do the most irresponsible action.

What meritocracy needs to thrive imo is saftey and security to make those accomplishments. We don't have that right now. The government protects criminals and punishes law abiding citizens. Why would I ever start up a business in Oakland just to get robbed every other day, and then fined because a car crashed into my store leaving glass and wood scattered on the streets? How am I suppised to pay my employees more than I am bringing home? How am I supposed to trust that I can bring my business open when the government can shut it down for whatever reason like they did during the pandemic?

I remember hearing this proverb from some of my older relatives that lived in the Soviet Union. “The hardest worker on the kolkhoz(state run collective farm) is the horse, but kolkhoz director is paid the most.” How hard you work doesn’t matter, what matters is the work you do and the way you do it.

My take on commenters saying "meritocracy doesn't necessarily hire smart-but-poor people": Meritocracy isn't 100% perfect, but it's the most efficient system we have. The imperfections can be handled through charities, loans, and reinvestment through scholarships. Just because a person is smart but poor, that doesn't automatically entitle him to other people's money. If companies want the best people, they will do anything at their disposal to achieve that.

0:35 as someone with autism (which surely is one of those disadvantages) I mean... it would be nice if I didnt have to work so hard to get the same result as others. But how can that even be measured? All I know is my own experience.

I also know I have services that give me a kind of leg up in that sense of "fairness" and I hate taking them. Mostly for this exact reason. I want to be recognized for my actual merit not boosted just because its harder for me.

Only thing tho is that there are people out there that no matter how hard they work, they will only ever be kinda ok at something
