On June 19th 2013 James Gandolfini died of a heart attack in Rome at just 51 years old. A famously intense actor, he was credited with changing the very nature of television acting. First appearing in films such as True Romance and Get Shorty, it was the HBO series The Sopranos that made him a household name. But his dedication to his craft took a deep toll on the actor, and rumors of addiction and excess followed him throughout his career. Now expert pathologist Dr Michael Hunter is re-examining his medical history in order to discover what led him to die of a heart attack at only 51.

This film was first broadcast: 11 Feb 2018

I have to commend his acting skills.
He was so convincing as Tony Soprano that I believed that Tony and James Gandolfini were one and the same.
He was brilliance in his craft, personified.

James Gandolfini always said he had to have that weight on for Tony Soprano. It’s terrible that he didn’t look after himself after the Sopranos. He was a brilliant actor.

When he played Tony Soprano one loathed him and then loved him and then were disgusted in him but then he pulled you in ... a man in the mob killing ruthlessly but then having such a deep compassion for animals .. doing right then doing wrong .. he played the role to such an extent that he played it perfectly.. better than any actor ever could have !!! One thing I noted on sopranos was his breathing during intense scenes . You could hear the struggle for breath through his nose and of course the eating on the show was just intense too.. he was a magnificent actor and will alwayd be remembered.. nobody could have played Tony Soprano any better than he did and I mean NOBODY! RIP JAMES!!❤

This is so sad and tragic. I hope his son is recovering from the terrible event and shock, bereavement is a difficult process to go through, 10 years- is nothing to grief and sadness, loss and the shock.

Shocking that it's been 10 years since he died.

As an Englishman - who moved to Thailand in 2007 - I didn't even realize that the Sopranos had already finished - ironically in the very year I'd left England for SE Asia- when I heard the terrible news in 2013 that James Gandolfini (who'd become one of my favourite actors ever, btw) had died suddenly of a heart attack.. Finding out that the show's final season had already ended 6 years before (the same amount of time passed since I'd left my home town & country), just made the news all the more surreal to me, as well as so tragic.. To then learn ever moreso what a special, loved, and respected MAN, person, he was, not only such an amazing actor, just blew me away... RIP, James Gandolfini... 💙x❤️

He had everything and will be remembered forever. I’m 47 next month and have nothing and no one and would probably be forgotten.

When ever I watched new episode of mysterious death of a celebrity, not only it tells the story of his/her death but it also encouraged me to take care of my health as well. R.I.P to Tony.

The Sopranos was arguably the best TV drama ever. His acting was incredible. However, he was a weak man when it came to looking after himself. RIP.

Thanks very much for posting. In November 04 I had the great honor of meeting James (†) and Tony Sirico (†) in the Middle East when they were on a USO entertainment tour. Both of them were absolutely stand up guys. I didn't always have a lot of good experiences (or memories) during my time in the Middle East, but meeting them will always be a special moment in time that I will never forget. Tony, Paulie, thank you. May you both rest in eternal peace 🙏
