GoPro Hero 8 Review - After 6 Months - Still Worth It?

This is my review of the GoPro 8 Black Action Camera after using it for just over 6 months.

I'm watching this on a well calibrated Samsung Q90r TV and I gotta say, that video quality is borderline breath taking! If that's how the Hero 8 looks with no color correction, then damn, I think it might be worth the price! I really disagree with the price tag for the whole kit, but the video quality is just, , , , WOW!

Decided on this one over the Brave 6 plus. Akaso isint selling them in Canada until September, too bad, I had a 20% off student deal...total cost likely around $200 with external mic...BUT! I found a local go pro hero 8 black used once with the “holiday bundle” (2 batteries, 32gb sd card, head strap, selfie stick/Tripod) for....$275 Canadian in box!!!! Can’t say no to that, I’ll order a hero 8 foam windsock for $18 and skip the media mod! What a steal! Also I believe the next 24 hours go pro has their hero 8 black’s on sale using code “Summer” for $279 usd...not quite as good a deal as mine at $205 usd...but still pretty good!

Agree. Prefer to use my handphone at night. But GP8 great discreet product. Especially if you hook it on to the gopro bag. Another feature is you are able to extract stills using software (not extremely sharp but ok also depends on fps and lighting) . Great review thanks.

As of March 2, 2023, GoPro is selling the Hero 8 Black directly for US $199.00. Best Buy has it for $199.99 both online and in local stores that still have some in stock.

For the money, I think this is probably the very best deal one can get on one of the better quality action cameras.

I finally stopped goofing around with budget cameras and bought a Hero 8 Black at that price. I recently took a cheapie action camera on a once-in-a-lifetime, family ski trip only to discover the batteries were dying on me within 5 to 60 seconds, even with the batteries and camera kept in an inside coat pocket to keep them warm. From what I have gathered, about the only genuinely reliable way to get good action videos on a snow covered mountain is to use original GoPro batteries in an original GoPro camera. I wish I’d come to this conclusion a couple weeks ago, but at least was able to get a few videos on the trip using my iPhone.

Question...since you've been using it for 6 months, how has the reliability been?

Many have reported major stability issues and even the GoPro 8 failing to save video footage to the card even though it appeared to have kept recording.


The GoPro 8 seems to have a lot of great features but if you can't count on it to actually record video reliably every time...its a NoPro to me.

Thanks for the review always appreciate an honest review. I love my DJi Osmo Action but that was because I use the DJI drone and wanted to make it easier for editing and colour grading. Both are great cameras and you can’t go wrong with either.

How long will this cam record before automatically shutting off. I don’t mean battery life, I mean the built-in recording length limitation. Due to import/export legislation, most camcorders (GoPros included), have self-imposed recording limits. 😒

Hi do you experience the freezing and suddenly stop recording glitches most people complain about ? Coz i am planning to get one or if you could suggest between Osmo action or GP8 as user much appreciated

Cool vid, A question regarding fps and shutter. Ive heard that your shutter should be double your fps but but on a sunny day when setting shutter to double the fps whether its 120 or 240 it makes the image very bright and washed out. Setting shutter to auto always helps. Is this normal? Thanks.
