SPECTRE (2015) Daniel Craig: James Bond Revisited

It's likely one of the most controversial James Bond movies of all time. Still, Sam Mendes's SPECTRE was intended to be a massive 007 epic that would pull together elements from all the other Daniel Craig James Bond movies for what I'm sure they hoped would be a global blockbuster that could rival SKYFALL. Fans were excited because it promised the return of Ernst Stavro Blofeld. While the box office receipts and critical reaction fell short somewhat, it was still a blockbuster that paved the way for the upcoming NO TIME TO DIE, even if fans, by and large, seem to dislike it. Retconning the Quantum organization to being a branch of SPECTRE made sense, but claiming Silva from Skyfall was also a part of it just felt like an unnecessary asspull.

Also Blofeld being Bond’s foster brother is literally the plot twist of Austin Powers and Doctor Evil in Goldmember. Like I can’t believe they stole a plot twist from a Parody of Bond

I love how the studio was insistent on Christoph being this Oberhauser guy, yet they let the cat out of the bag by naming the movie Spectre 🤦🏻‍♂️

Ironically the Blofeld of the original Fleming novels is built like Dave Bautista - big hulking physical and cerebral threat. That would have been a good twist.

The car chase had the excitement of a car commercial.

Baustista and Belluci were criminally underused in this film. Dave could have been a great modern day Red Grant, I get the "silent menacing" type they went with, but the dude can act. And, I agree that 5 minutes of Belluci in the film needed to be longer. Its Monica Belluic FFS.

Interestingly, the Day of the Dead scene was, at the time, completely made up. Mexico City had never had a parade like that for the holiday. The city has been staging a parade since 2016 because of _Spectre._

Silva was a great villain in Skyfall, being one of singular motivation. And Spectre just undermines that by revealing he was an agent of Spectre, particularly without revealing how he became one.

I rewatched all of the James Bond movies with my mother last year and was surprised to find that this was the only one we both found utterly boring. It just seemed to drag and Craig seemed rather bored throughout. The opening day of the dead sequence is stunning, but its downhill from there.

I had more fun watching pigeons doing double-takes in Moonraker because as dumb as that film is, its still entertainingly silly.

The biggest mistake is establishing a foster brotherhood between Bond and Blofeld. Bond movies should not be about Bond or his personal history. There's also a moment where Blofeld specifically says "this will kill you", does it, and Bond walks away with a headache.

I really liked Spectre… I think it does have a bit of a tough task being after Skyfall but I can’t help but like it. I love all the Bond films so for me, even a so so bond film will merit high scores and especially a Craig bond!
