6.4 Quantum Numbers and Atomic Orbitals | General Chemistry

Chad provides a comprehensive lesson on the Atomic Orbitals and Quantum Numbers. He describes the characteristics and shapes of the s, p, d, and f orbitals and then explains how the four quantum numbers (n, l, ml, ms) describe an electron's occupation of a specific orbital, in a specific subshell, in a specific electronic shell in an atom. The set of four quantum numbers effectively gives an electron's address in an atom. The characteristics of the principle quantum number (n), azimuthal quantum number (l), magnetic quantum number (ml), and spin quantum number (ms) are discussed at length.

00:00 Lesson Introduction
00:57 Atomic Orbitals (s, p, d, f)
05:51 Principle Quantum Number (n)
07:28 Azimuthal Quantum Number (l)
11:12 Magnetic Quantum Number (ml)
14:16 Spin Quantum Number (ms)
19:24 How to Determine Quantum Numbers for an Electron
25:31 Possible Sets of Quantum Numbers

Thanks a million Dr. Chad for the enlightenment. This topic has been a stone wall for me to burse but with your analysis, I can solve it even when I am sleeping.

Watching from India (International Student). I am from Sierra Leone 🇸🇱

Hi Chad, @ time 24:01, shouldn't L be l=2 because the range for l is 0...n-1, so since our n is equal to 3, our L value should be 3-1=2? Therefore L= 2; d subshell?

Hey chad, do you think you'll cover Schrodingers equation or any parts of pchem?

Do you go through shielding, penetration and Zeffirelli in any of your videos by any chance ? And if so which ones ? Thanks !

hi chad, you said that ml determines the position of the orbital on the xyz axis but how do we correlate the ml number to the xyz axis?

I'm very much obliged to you. I can't understand my own lecturer, my native tongue is Turkish, but I understand you very well.

Chad, sir, I know you dont mean to be funny when you're teaching but when you did that spinning motion with your finger during the quantum numbers section, i laughed my butt off😂. Anyway, once again, good lesson. This stuff is dense and difficult but i think i got a grasp on it. You seem like you have a lot of patience as a teacher. And you radiate such friendly kindness. I am from Boston, and we are all grumpy Robert frosts. Westerners are so nice. Anyway, thanks for your lessons 🤗

For the example u did, why did u use meters as the answers u it. (J from p constant and kg from M where not cancelled

Sir can we consider a shell as a group of houses. And we call these houses as subshells . Subshells have rooms Called orbitals ?? Is it right to make understand?
