Of the four Gospels, Mark's is by far the shortest… or is it? For centuries, religious scholars have studied its original, abrupt ending, as well as the ways writers have expanded on it over the years.

Mark is the earliest canonical Gospel and begins with the baptism of Jesus by John. No miraculous birth narrative and an abrupt ending as noted. Mark's Gospel was written decades before Matthew, Luke and John. Matthew and Luke respectfully copy most of Mark's content as a framework for their narratives. It is the earliest source and represents what Christians in Mark's community believed at the time.

The four endings show the intellectual dishonesty of early Christians. At least one of them, and possibly three, show that they were prepared to present their own forgeries as part of Mark’s work. No one, I think, suggests that the Freer logion is authentic. If the abrupt ending is genuine, then the other two are fakes. If either the short ending or the long ending is genuine, then the other is a fake, and the abrupt ending is, at best, an accident.

Just so everyone in the comments understands, this is a completely secular perspective on the gospel of Mark, clear bias.
