Sonic boom heard over Washington DC after fighter jets intercept unresponsive aircraft

US authorities scrambled fighter jets to intercept an unresponsive light aircraft that violated the airspace over the Washington DC area and later crashed into mountainous terrain in south-west Virginia, officials have said.

The US fighter jets caused a sonic boom over Washington DC on Sunday, as they raced to catch up with the light aircraft, sending some residents into a brief panic.

That sonic boom was wicked. Honestly I live in a condo and I thought my neighbors were doing work on their house. What struck me odd though is house the house shook after hearing that sound. I live in the 3rd and 4th floor. It felt like my house was about to fall over.

I was in D.C and I was walking over Arlington bridge and no planes had flown out of Reagan for a while after the boom that's when I felt something out of the ordinary.

So the flight simulator didn't lie. You can be flying at 10k feet above the ground with a speed of sound but the people will still hear the sonic boom. When plane is flying with a speed of sound it creates a cone behind it, the higher plane the bigger cone is so the sound travels wider.

Grew up in Clayton/Dayton home of Wright Patt in the 70s. Back when a general (or GS35) was tasked with after burner development. Suffice to say we heard booms 3 or 4 times daily. You would have thought it would be Edwards the test base in Cali but Wright Patt is material command so the contractors must have been doing a show n go. Wright Patt has full bird colonels pouring coffee for the many generals.
