Hilary Hahn – Prokofiev: Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major, Op. 19, II. Scherzo: Vivacissimo

Hilary Hahn’s new recording “Paris” pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of a city that has been close to her heart throughout her career. “Paris” sees the American violinist resume her productive partnership with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and its Music Director, Mikko Franck. Sergei Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.1 received its first performance in the French capital in 1923. “It’s a rule-breaker of a concerto,” notes Hahn. “It’s one of my favorite pieces to play. I feel like I’m on a racetrack sometimes; at other times I feel like I’m floating in the ether. It’s mercurial – it changes constantly, so it keeps you on your toes as a listener and a performer.”

The whole thing was well worth the wait. Hilary's choices of questions and her answers were full of wisdom and caring, especially appreciated "Trust yourself." The music of course is off the charts! The animation is beautiful.

Next year, this concerto will be 100 years old, but it still feels brand new. It's so refreshing and different.

For me this movement is very powerful because it makes me picture all of us living creatures marching sloppily and hastily towards our inevitable death. It helps me accept that situation, which I'm very thankful for because I've always struggled to accept death.

This is one of the coolest music video I've ever seen (yes including the countless number of pop songs music video that the mainstream tv has forced upon us). Please please do more of these. This is the apex of creativity, and it also helps non-classically trained listeners to get to appreciate classical music in a very effective way. I marked my calendar for this like 10 times and it was well worth it! Your new Paris album is outstanding, Hilary! I got some cool Fantasia vibes from this representation of music in the visual medium and it was absolutely surreal!

I already have this concert on my iPod from another violinist. When I heard the 2nd movement of Hilary's new recording a few days ago I thought it's another concert. Now I've just listened to three previous recordings of her. This one is the best for me. Before she played 1:22 to 1:35 "frech". Now it's "rotzfrech", making me shiver. Thank you so much, Hilary!!
