Artemis Fowl - Teaser Trailer Reaction

Jay and Adam try to decode the teaser for Artemis Fowl, and then end up signing a secret government organization's theme song.

Artemis Fowl starts from the Clarkean premise that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" and then takes a lot of Irish/Celtic myth and makes it super-science. So Artemis Fowl is a child criminal genius who ends up working alongside the faerie world in various capers. The faerie cops, equipped with all sorts of hyper-tech, first work to take Fowl down, and then end up recruiting him. Adventures ensue. And that's all ye need to know for now.

You were reasonably close with your guess at how the world works. The fairies (which is a general term for elves, sprites, dwarves, centaurs...) have super high-tech and live deep underground. The tree is just a great oak on the surface which they use in a ritual to restore their magic. The humans are completely unaware of fairy society. Artemis is a criminal mastermind described as being young enough to still believe in fairies and magic, but intelligent enough to discover and exploit them. He starts out very much as the villain of the piece. Aided by his bodyguard Butler, his aim is to restore the Fowl family fortune and find his missing father, so he kidnaps an elfish LEP officer called Holly Short in order to claim a ransom. They don't give in very easily, and that's the basic premise for the first book. Later books involve Artemis helping the fairies in various situations for various reasons. They're very character driven, and there are eight books because that's what their story required.

Ok, Artimis fanboy here and a ”Viewer” giving you the ”420” (dont know if that nr is right not an ’merican).

Artimis is pretty much a prebubcent Adam if Adam came from a long tradition of criminal minds. He is cold calculating oblivian to ”human” feelings and wants to restore his familys wealth it once had at any cost.

The family motto that is ”Gold is everything” (might be a bit of since i did read the translated Books).

And yes it is on Irland and the Celtic myths is put thru a sci-FI lens. Guess what the gold comes into play.

Make no misstake Artemis is not a very sympatich caracthar but you still root for him. If you like hiest movies evan if his heist is a ”bit” darker.

The second most importent person in the Books was not fetured in the trailer but i would say if it is in like the Books that person and the realtionship between Artemis and ”spolier” Holly will pretty much make or break this film equally as much as if Artemis is messed up.

Also like Manny Books it rellay hevaly on inner dialog in bothe the main charactars. Wich Will be hard to get in a film.

Worse case they rush it being affried Artemis Will look to unsypatetic and by that loosing the whole development arc he goes thru in 8 Books.

You're not too far off of what it is about. It's magic, Elves, Fairies, Sprites, Gnomes, dwarves. A 12 year old kid who is just too smart for his own good is trying to steal fairy gold to save his dad. Technically Artemis is suppose to be a mini villain with the brains of way too smart for a 12 year old kid, and most of the human population. He's smarter than most adults. The books are really good though. I've read all of them and love them. I had to read them with a dictionary. This kid knows more vocabulary words I've never even heard of. This movie kind of worried about how it's going to go.

Atremis fowl actually has a graphic novel adaptation I remember reading as a kid. I read both the graphic novel and books and, if I'm remembering right, the novel stuck to the books well. If you guys want to buy or check out the graphic novel it wouldn't take long at a to read and you'd basically understand the books. Just a suggestion. It'll help you understand a lot more than sparknotes or anything while still being fast.

It's okay guys. Without reading the books you can have any number if reactions because you don't have preconceptions.
They didn't give really info for people who didn't read the source material in the teaser.
But they managed to tick off most the people who read the books by giving just enough that we can tell they made some big changes.
Impressive really.

Eh... I'm not a big fan of Artemis Fowl but according to my friends who love the series this doesn't seem to be shaping up as a good adaptation. Disney has apparently changed a lot of stuff and fans of the books aren't happy. This feels like another A Wrinkle In Time situation, and I probably won't be seeing this just like I didn't seen AWIT.

Edit: Also, the effects on that logo transition were terrible. Made it feel like I was watching a trailer for a Disney Channel Original Movie. Speaking of... Gosh I'm not looking forward to the Kim Possible movie, everything I've seen just looks bad from Kim's outfit to Dr. Drakken's appearance, it just doesn't feel right (except for Sean Giambrone from The Goldbergs as Rob Stoppable, that's perfect casting right there).

I'm in the same boat as you guys. I have no idea what this is. I can see there's a high production value, but I can't tell if this is the next Harry Potter or the next A Wrinkle In Time.

The original books had really great extreme characters with gritty backstories, intense motivations, an awesome personalities. All the books were character driven. The trailer makes it apparent some characters personalities have been changed, some casting differences change characters (Holly was supposed to be first female in her field--they cast her commander as a woman), and I'd bet some removal of "gritty" stuff in artemis character resulted in him being less extreme--and kinda generic. All that is pretty disappointing and makes me bet the movie won't be good--because they chose to write out the character's traits that made the books good.
