The Karamanid Emirate – the most powerful enemy of the Ottomans in Anatolia

The Karamanid Emirate was the oldest and longest-lived Anatolian beylik, and the most dangerous opponent of the emerging Ottoman Empire. The founders of the Karamanid dynasty were members of the Salur tribe of Oghuz Turks, who emigrated from modern-day Azerbaijan. Their state was established around 1250, near the city of Laranda. The city of Laranda was renamed Karaman in honor of their leader, Kerîmeddin Karaman Bey, and from and from 1275, became the capital of the Karamanid beylik. The Emirate was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1487, and the entire population of the beylik was resettled to the last person, some in Anatolia, others on the territory of modern Azerbaijan, but the main part was moved to European territories: in northeastern Bulgaria - the current Ludogorie region , and to southern Bulgaria - the current region of Kardzhali. Then the Ottomans founded Karaman Eyalet from former territories of Karamanids.

It’s thought that the Italian surname, Caramanica, originates from Karaman due to the people from Karaman ending up in Italy. Caraman=Karaman ica=“from” in Latin.

Yes, the majority of the Karamans were displaced in Ludogorie and along the Danube river, but not to Kurdzhali. The Turkish-speaking population in Kurdzhali were local peole who have been converted.
