A groundbreaking piece for the era, but it will not remain timeless for another century.

I'm 66 years old now, and primarily because of Covid and early retirement I have begun reading again after many years consuming stories in other ways (tv, movies, and gaming). During my peak reading years back in high school and college I was into mostly speculative fiction and magic realism, so I recently put a list together of science fiction books that are considered the best of the genre, and I decided to read them in roughly chronological order. This was the first book on my list and I enjoyed it far more than I expected to.

My research into the best science fiction books has also resulted in my discovery of online book reviewers such as yourself and it is enjoyable to hear different individual's opinions on the books I have read. You are doing and excellent job, and I appreciate your inclination to review without spoilers. I know that has to be difficult.

Hi. I read Time Machine recently and your review is spot on. I have two daughters and while I enjoy reading these old sci-fi classics, I have to remind myself to view them through the lens of time. Many did not age well but, perhaps, it is a part of why reading these works is so essential. It feels like a lot of folks these days forget how far we’ve come. Great review! 🙌

Nice to see this being reviewed, been a fan of Wells for over 40 years and have a small collection of his works. I recommened 'The New Accelerator', one of his very short but entertaining stories.

I don't think Wells considered either the Eloi or Morlocks morally superior, it was more about the ruthless amoral forces of Darwinism acting on societal trends as he understood them to create something monstrous and alien to his readers.

There is an authorized sequel written by modern author Stephen Baxter that is worth checking out, The Time Ships. It takes the themes of the original novella and amps them up.
