It’s almost like, people are tired of being under paid and not appreciated for the work they do.

As a teacher, we're treated like crap, work punishing hours, have to deal with the products of poor parenting and neglect, and aren't paid nearly enough. My school is short-staffed and the issues bleed out into everything. Our school has become a place where bullying and violence are the norm because we are so inundated with incidents and too short staffed to do what needs to be done. Now, I love the kids, so I stay, but I don't know anymore if I can work until retirement in this career. Our schools are in a CRISIS right now, just an absolute tailspin. I've been teaching for a decade and I would have never guessed that it would get this bad this fast. Most of all my heart breaks for the children, who aren't getting what they need.

Not only schools. A lot of people had to learn to live differently. The pandemic taught people how stressful their jobs were and how little compensation they were getting for it. They value themselves more. They realized what a drag there lives were working for less than a living wage.

Nearly half of our staff leave every year. This includes teachers, facilities staff, bus drivers, kitchen staff, and aides. One of our top educators resigned just before Christmas. It's easy now to find higher paying jobs in a less stressful work environment. My wife resigned from teaching last year after 12 years in her district. She found a position making more than double her salary after 12 years!

Underpaid, not appreciated and dealing with crazy kids and parents, will do that.

My mother was an underpaid elementary teacher but before she passed(metastatic cancer) she used every penny to make sure her students went home with clean clothes and food and turned around the whole school with positive vibes because my father has an okay job to keep the bills paid and keep our family fed, she was the definition of righteous

Why is this a surprise? Teachers are massively overworked and underpaid. We are expected to pay for classroom supplies from our own pockets. Now we are being threatened constantly with getti[ng fired for teaching the truth about our history. We are getting death threats and have to deal with discipline problems like never before. It was a barely survivable profession before covid and now it’s not a sustainable pace. I loved teaching but I was working 60+ hours a week and getting paid for 40. I was unappreciated and the only thing I ever got was more work handed to me and rarely acknowledgement of how insane my work load already was. I am so glad I left and I’m sorry to say, I’m not going back despite teaching being my calling and my being very good at it.

Who's gonna get 60k in debt for a Masters to be paid a 40k salary with perpetual mandatory overtime?

I am a veteran soldier who is now teaching. Teaching is BY FAR more difficult. Every day I go to work, it’s a real battle… mentally, emotionally, spiritually…. My EVERYTHING is tested. As a soldier, I’m surrounded by brothers and sisters who are on my team. As a teacher, I’m surrounded by middle schoolers who see me as the enemy. They would rather be on TikTok or playing video games because that is what is more important to them.

Student behaviors and attitudes are off the charts.

Start paying The Most Important people in our lives better wages, give them greater respect, and put more funding into school supplies and buildings. These people do at leat 50% of raising our children and inspiring our future. They deserve so much better. This includes bus drivers, aides, lunchroom workers, and custodians.

We had about 20 years to avoid this problem, and did not.

If they're struggling to hire, they need to pay better / offer better benefits. There is no labor shortage. This is the fault of employers

Number one reason: overworked, underpaid and underappreciated. It's not just teachers that are underpaid, in some districts even school bus drivers are underpaid as well. In my area a nearby county is hiring drivers for $12 an hour. You gotta be sh***ing me!!

Stop treating teachers and staff like expendable idiots

In a country like Finland that has top-notch schools, they treat their teachers with great respect and give them lots of autonomy to instruct as they see fit. We've been doing the opposite in the US for decades, forcing teachers to teach to the test. In kindergarten, we tell teachers to abandon everything they learned in college about early childhood learning (play, hands-on, explore, create, pretend) and embrace reading and writing. Now, we've got these crazy folks who don't want the history of slavery to be taught because it will make their precious little angels feel guilty about being white (total bs). So, no, I'd never recommend the teaching profession to anyone.

It’s more than being under paid, it is the stress of unreasonable district policies, focus to meet certain metrics without addressing lack of parental and student responsibility. The issue is that students can do no wrong and we are begging them to come to school and teachers are expected to somehow pass the kids who show little to no effort. That is the real reason that make people want to quit— and not the pay.

I had put in 32 years as a classroom teacher in May. I didn't have to retire, in fact the principal begged me not to retire. I'm glad I did. I'm also tired of getting treated like a pile of spit. They wouldn't even give us hazard pay when we went right back into the classroom Jan 2021. I'm embarrassed the way teachers get shafted. Police and Nurses didn't. Hope they have a fun time filling the positions that nobody wants to fill.

Staffing is in trouble across the board. People want to be appreciated. They call us essential personal, well...than pay us.
