For as common as the "I don't care what people think of me" platitude is, only neckbeards can say it and truly mean it.

When you have never received attention from anyone or been praised for anything you've ever done, it's easy to just not care about how you look, because you won't be getting any attention regardless

When you are fat, it is easy to think "I am already ugly, what is the point."

As cliché as it sounds balance is key, you don't want to be a neckbeard who truly don't care, also you don't want to be an American Psycho caricature who cares too much about how others perceive you either.

I’m currently exiting the neckbeard phase of my life, 309 pounds right now used to be 350 aiming for 180 and I shave constantly.

Many men just feel like it’s already over for them so why do anything. Somewhere along the way men were convinced that they were beaten before they picked up the controller.

Self-neglect is a common symptom of depression.

Some people are also just depressed, or have other mental issues that make daily maintenance challenging. I'm sure that can be a factor.

You have to feel good before you can look good.

Ik a guy like this. He’s genuinely a good and kind guy, he just doesn’t keep up with himself. Has the neck beard, like 260lbs, lets his toe nails grow like 3 inches. He’s the brother of a close friend of my wife and I.

Genuinely intelligent, down right earth, he’s not the typical Discord moderator or reddit werido type. He seriously just doesn’t take care of himself. If he did and lost some weight, he would be a handsome dude, and could easily find a girl. Ik he gets jealous because my wife, and his male friends and family mostly are with very attractive women and he wonders why women wont show him attention. He’s not nasty about bit, more like defeated.

We’ve all tried to be honest with him, but he literally sees nothing wrong with his hygiene and health. He thinks his personality and intelligence is enough. Like he could be with someone, just not the type he wants.

I mean, I hope the guys finds love one day, and I hope he starts taking care of himself. He has potential but his biggest problem is that he doesn’t want to work. Or if he does he tries finding the least amount of days and hours possible. So laziness and not keeping up with himself really. Kinda sad cause he could do so much better if he actually just tried.

I never thought I would hear the term "neckbeard personality type"

I couldn't care less about looking attractive, but i do care about convenience. Unkept, unwashed beard and hair is not just unattractive, it's annoying for the owner. It's a lot less effort to shave your head and face once a week than it is to pick out breadcrumbs from your beard after every meal, swiping hair out of your eyes, cleaning the clogged drain, or constantly having to scratch your itchy face.

The thing about the neckbeard aesthetic is that its entirely reversible when needs be. A five minute shave, half hour haircut, and a few months of dieting and cardio to cut away the fat at the gym and it all goes away. It's not giving up for most, it's just postponing. Its an 'I don't need to put in the effort right now, so why bother?'.

Autism and ADHD can also be a factor. I dont mean this in a cruel way but not having social awareness is a big factor in being a neckbeard. They just dont see the merits in shaving or getting a haircut and so end up with that scruffy beard and long hair look by default. Social recluses also end up pursuing the same kinds of hobbies as each other which is why gaming and warhammer all attract similar folks.

Don't take care of yourself to look good for others. Do it for yourself first and foremost, and your self esteem will rise. "Damn I look good today" is a fantastic feeling to have.

Its fear of change. They dont see themselves from the outside, when they look in the mirror they think they look like themselves. Lower the self esteem the harder it is to make a drastic change in your appearance.
