Did My Tesla Get Totaled After A Fender Bender?

The worst thing to happen in a high-end car is an accident. When our Tesla Model X got hit on new years eve we are really worried there could be some underlining damage.

Buying a Car Doesn't Have to Suck™

After 44 years in the body shop business matching paint on bumpers and metal vehicles was one of my biggest nightmares.

I got bumped in the rear end of my car about 1986-ish. No damage to either car, but the guy asked me why I stopped. I said the cars in front of me stopped so I figured it was the thing to do.

Teslas are cool cars, but they’re a nightmare to own. The insurance on them is higher than other cars because they’re so expensive to own and are totaled so easily. Accidents that most other cars can survive can total a Tesla. It’s also not because the car can’t be repaired, but because the cost is so high, it’s just easier for the insurance company to total the vehicle.

Of course, you’ve also got other problems when trying to repair a Tesla. As you pointed out, your area has one repair shop that’s authorized to work on Teslas. Imagine living in an area that doesn’t have one. Also, parts are hard to get, and it can take a while to get your car back. I’ve seen other YouTubers post videos about getting their Teslas repaired and it’s taken at least a month. I don’t think I’ve ever had one of my cars at a repair shop for more than two weeks.

Teslas may be nice cars, but I’m not looking to own one, or any other electric vehicle, any time soon.

Remember everyone, an estimate is just that. I was an estimator for 20 years and rarely did my or any other estimate that I ever saw stay exactly as quoted. Frequently people needing repairs (especially when insurance is involved) think that they must shop for the lowest price. Unscrupulous estimators know this and will purposely low ball the estimate knowing full well that once the vehicle is in the shop all bets are off.

I have seen lots of Tesla get totaled for very little damage. Most people i see just don't get minor damage fixed. Not the case with your accident, but many people get rear ended because they follow to close so they have to stop fast causing the accident.

At least you can claim it on her insurance. I just had a deer run into the side of my vehicle 2 weeks ago and I can't go after the deer to pay for the damages it going to cost to fix it

There's a Tesla body shop in Springfield NJ that I pass every now and then and it's always full of cars. They sit there for months at a time. Must be frustrating.

Speaking of Kias. We just had one with a minor fender and bumper damage we repaired. The girl picked it up. And didn't make it home. Called trying to say it was smtn we did. But towed to our mechanic and it was a seized engine. It's been took to Kia now to see what they will do. However we had another Kia a few months back. We repaired it. Replace air bags and sensors. Air bag lights would not reset. It's been at a Kia dealer now since August i want to say. Still not fixed. And they won't even answer or return phone calls.

And insurance company knowadays like to totaled tesla because of their expensive fix. A simple fender bender easily cost 10K for a tesla.

I brake check Tesla's every time I get the chance because I don't like their self driving and shouldn't be allowed cuz the car can be hacked and you can crash just as much as a person it does not make the car any safer than a person it actually makes it more dangerous because people sleep while they're self-driving

The great thing about the area where it sustained is protected by foam and recessed bumper. Ours was hit hard directly at liftgate and the costs came from that damage. Ensure sonar sensors are replaced if they sustained impact. They do a lot to protect the rear of the X from damages while in reverse

The 1.6T (in that Veloster) is one of the better Hyundai/Kia engines produced. Of course no engine line is 100% but if you were to buy a Hyundai, the 1.6T is one of the better ones.

What was the point of the car letting another car turn left? People never stop amazing me.
As far as Kia’s go I have had 4 Kia’s and all served me very well one of which I’m still driving as my daily and it has well over 200, 000 miles on the original 2.4l GDI. But I have had two Cadillacs and both needed transmissions at early stages. Everyone has different experiences.
