" Escambia County K9 Streeter was awarded the "Medal of Courage" on Thursday by the sheriff's office. The Escambia County Sheriff's Office held a presentation to honor Streeter. The K9 jumped off the Highway 90 bridge in late June while chasing after drive-by shooting suspects who first jumped off into the water. "This presentation is for K9 Streeter -- for his unwavering commitment to duty and his never-give-up attitude, even when facing great danger," Sheriff Chip Simmons said. Deputies recovered Streeter following the30-40 foot fall. He sufferedsome rib bruising and other minor injuries. He was treated that night atDavis Animal Hospital Emergency Center and was released the following morning after an evaluation at Westside Animal Hospital. Streeter returned to normal duty withhis handler Deputy Kevin Stimmell in less than a week. Sheriff Simmons praised Streeter's efforts the day after the incident. "He's a bit of a hero because he did what all the men and women at the sheriff's office do -- they don't stop until they catch the bad guy," he said. "If you've ever been over to that bridge, that's a pretty good drop." Article by WEAR News

The officer talking to the dog after it jumped the bridge just melted my heart.

Did y’all hear the dog handler say “come here baby, you’re ok”. That man loves his dog. Made me bawl. ❤

Why am I crying because that dog was so brave to jump and catch those murderers 😭😭 I can’t believe how some people don’t appreciate dogs knowing how faithful they are

Thanks for sharing. I never knew that they named the K9 after fallen officers. What a unique way to honor them.

We just had a K9 pass in the line of duty and it was heartbreaking. His memorial service was so respectful and tear jerking. The handler was given a flag just as a fallen soldier. K9s give their ALL to protect the other officers.

Love that the dogs are treated with the same honors as the human officers and being named after other fallen officers is very touching.

What a GREAT video!!! My two favorite things, true crime and dogs!

My ex was a police officer in Kentucky, and he was granted the first canine that the department had ever had. His name was Rexo, and you talk about an amazing dog! He knew the difference between me and his handler, my ex would let him out and he would run to the back of the yard (about 3/4 acre) and then run back to ex and jump up to greet him full force. When it was me he would do exactly the same thing, except you could see him pull himself back before gently jumping up with his paws on my shoulders and give me sweet puppy kisses! My ex lost his mind, quit his job, and we got divorced. It was hard for me not to take the dog with me, but I couldn’t take him away from what he was trained and loved to do, so he went to another officer and had a great career. I was driving through one time while visiting home and he was out with his handler. I asked if I could see him and the officer warned me that he might not remember me, but he opened the back so I could just see him. Rexo looked a little off guard at first, but then I said his name and he came pouncing at me with those same puppy kisses all over my face. He was such a good boy!!! 💜

My son is in the Army Airborne Rangers & he is a sniper. His dog is pit/lab mix & would jump from the plane into the area “the boys” were workings he stood over my child facing the opposite direction to protect him as he is focused intentionally on his target. This frees up a man that would stand watch. His dog also knew wind speed & validity & would adjust his handler accordingly as he is spotting their target. By nudging the thigh of the leg that needed to be adjusted for optimal wind, humidity, temperatures, etc.
Zeus was also leader of “the pack” if they had to go into a covered area or densely cover region, he led his platoon with courage & no thought of harm. About 5 years ago Zeus went in for a routine eye exam & the beginning of cataracts we seen along with some questionable thyroid levels. He also has lesions on his body that have been seen with ultrasound & the decision was made to retire Zeus at 13. Needless to say the dog went into depression & was missing “his men” so, they took him from retirement & he now goes into Army hospitals to help calm a tense situation. He is content but has again had a bad health report & they had no choice but to assign him to desk duty. He has lots of contact, hugs, pats &!treats. He goes as far as walking the platoon out onto the tar Mac to leave each deployment & while his boys are gone, he gets a bit of a vacation. If & when he leaves the service completely, he will have a honor guard funeral with all the pomp & circumstance. He is decorated Major & loves to wear his red beret & vest with his rank. It is funny when he walks with me through the base, he receives salutes at every turn & it brings me to tears to know the respect he has garnered. Quite the dog

Meanwhile my local K9 unit JUST got bulletproof and stab proof vests. When they're literally officers. When they are put in even more dangerous situations. Hell yeah Streeter!

oh, the way the officer talk to the dog when he was found in the water, made me cry! Calling the dog baby and trying to reassure him that everything is ok! You could hear the worry in his voice. It is apparent that the dog is really loved and not just by the officer but also from the whole sheriff´s office! What a brave boy!

As a former K9 wife, I so appreciate your coverage of these magnificent dogs. I was also a Dispatcher/Jailer as well as a Reserve Ofc. I often went to training with our dog, and as much as the dog would 99% only listen to “dad” at home he listened to just like our other family pet. 😂
