Toyota Tacoma rear end clunk. Problem solved! There are many posts and forums on this rear end noise issue.
After greasing the drive shaft and checking the slip yoke, the noise was still there. I found the issue on my Tacoma to be with the rear air bags or lift kit.
It was a clunking noise or snapping noise caused when the rear end articulated. Particularly when braking and voming to a stop.

You mentioned the rear diffs of these trucks have backlash, do you have any resources that talk about that? I've got an all original 2011 taco that is clunking and I think there is play in the rear end, wondering if I'm describing the same thing. Backlash to me is usually referring to the gears in the diff grinding

It almost looks like it's put on backwards. That's why rear shocks go opposite in mounting. Rear axel twists a little at take off and stopping.
But a good rubber gasket idea.
I thought ypu were gonna say you ran over the blue turd car.

Nice find Stephan. Those noises can drive you nuts for sure 🥴 BTW Do you have the Tacoma undercoated every once in a while?

I don't think it is a good idea for you to drive with 50 psi in your air bags when the truck is empty. Max 20 psi. I will recommend 15 psi empty for every day driving.
