Now that Wicked Part 1 is in theaters, viewers, new and old, must be wondering how everything connects to the Wizard of Oz. Well, we’ve got you covered. We’ll mainly be focusing on the material that we know from the films. Since there are differences between the films, the musicals, and the source material, we’ve decided to simplify it a bit. And yes, we know Wicked Part 2 hasn’t released in films yet, but we know the broad strokes. Anyway, here’s our approximation of the Wicked - Wizard of Oz timeline. Let’s go.

People... The story just explained the plot of Wicked, but it's important to understand that all of these stories are different, they are not like a real movie series. L. Frank Baum wrote a children's story, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, " in 1900. In 1939, MGM made a movie based on L. Frank Baum's book. Due to its popularity, Gregory Maguire wrote "Wicked" in 1995, essentially fan fiction. In his story, Maguire provides a backstory for the witches of Oz, but L. Frank Baum has nothing to do with it. It's just fan fiction. In 2013, Disney made their own interpretation of the Wizard of Oz origin with "Oz the Great and Powerful". Please understand that these stories are not a series. After the 1939 movie, all of them are just interpretations that allow us to imagine new possibilities for the world of Oz.

It's interesting that in Wicked, Elphaba fakes her own death by a trapdoor. In the movie they used a trapdoor to simulate Margaret Hamilton melting.

I always thought that Glinda talking to the Munchkinlanders at the start of Wicked takes place before she heads off to the Emerald City to tell Dorothy how to get home. In the movie we see Dorothy is on her way to Oz suggesting that Glinda hasn't been there yet. Also Glinda says she has to go as she has things to do, which I assumed was that she needed to get to the Emerald City.

I think that one thing a lot of people don’t know is that on Amazon Prime there is a kids show called lost in Oz and it takes place several years in the future.Worth a watch

Very interesting theories! I've been a fan of The Wizard of Oz for about 65 years, and I just saw Wicked yesterday. This video explains very well these theories!

You forgot the part where the Wizard overthrows Pastorius and gives Momby the infant Ozma to hide away in order to take over the Land of Oz.

So all this time we thought Dorothy was all innocent and the wicked witch of the west was the bad one when in reality she just wanted her sisters shoes and to expose the Wizard and live happy with the scare crow.
