I just finished reading Solaris, decided to open YouTube, noticed new notifications, and clicked on said notifications only to see this video as the first one. Cosmically beautiful. Always look forward to your videos.

Thank you, Darrel. Your superb analysis clarified key issues for me in distinguishing between Lem's novel vs the 2 movie adaptations.

Great job! I particularly enjoyed the Legacy chapter. I knew Lem was a critic of the western tradition but didn't know the details. I know as a western reader, Lem's work definitely stands apart. There's just something about the conflicted nature of Soviet era art that renders it captivating. Looking forward to more in the Great Sci-Fi Books Explained series.

On a technical note, the production/graphics on this video is really nice. The whole thing feels elite and polished. Nicely done.

I have to thank you for this excellent look into Lems perspective of his own work and that of SciFi during his life time. I have been fascinated by the book, reading it multiple times. It is nice to hear that Lem and I share similar views of the movies based on his book. I felt they always missed the mark. Thank you for the time you spent bringing Lem and Solaris back into the minds and hearts of lovers of the genre. Well done.

My first exposure to Solaris was the Clooney movie. Being a scifi enthusiast, I was sorely disappointed. Years later, I heard the first movie was better and I recently watched it and liked it enough to read the novel, which I really loved. Was left with a few questions and this review was perfect timing. It solidified some interpretations I was wondering if I got right.
Thanks for the video.

I just finished reading Solaris last week! I preferred The Invincible (my Lem gateway book) but still enjoyed. I am very glad I watched the movies first as I would have been quite disappointed at how different they were! The book is so much more interesting in the topics it delves into.

Great video. I had no idea Lem felt that way about the films. I rather enjoyed them. The novel was fantastic and was, I believe, my first foray into sci fi from other countries when I read it back in the 90s.

Interesting how Lem's view of the unknown parallels but lacks the xenophobia of Lovecraft's.

The unsettling thing about the unknown is how it seems to present us with both too much and too little.

Listening to Lem's opinions about the films based on his book makes me think of Heinlein and what he'd have possibly thought of Verhoeven's take on his Starship Troopers. 😀 😛

I thought that King's 'From a Buick 8' had much in common with 'Solaris'. And that the great philosophers Richards and Jagger produced a work with the same point.
