Not the best idea to coil the excess antenna cable.. cut the cable to length, leaving a little extra if you have to move the radio a little or replace the connector. The extra cable coil is just adding loss to the system.
And definitely use a SWR meter to check the antenna. A high SWR and your radio and antenna will not perform well, worst case you can burn out the radio.
