Ortakoy is one of the most popular districts of Istanbul and a favourite of locals and tourists. It has the magnificent Ortaköy Büyük Mecidiye Mosque perched out on a peninsula located near the European leg of the July 15 Martyrs Bridge. It was commissioned by the Ottoman Sultan Abdulmecid I, and its construction was completed in 1856.
Built-in Rococo or Ottoman Baroque architecture, a style of architecture that fused together the style of the eastern and western architecture of the time, is the symbol of the entire district. The relatively small mosque, with only two minarets and one domed ceiling, is one of the most iconic photographs of istanbul. Ortakoy has beautiful streets that are lined with intriguing shops and cafes.
The area is world-famous because it is located within a triangle of historical religions. The Ortaköy Mosque, Ayios Fokas Church and Etz Ahayim Synagogue make up the triangle, one of the most characteristic neighbourhoods in istanbul.
