FordTechMakuloco has just put out a video recommending a new design high volume oil pump from Melling be installed on these engines whenever the timing set is replaced. I believe it applies to most 3.5/3.7 engines since 2007. Thanks for the video and love your channel and the short, informative clips.

I have the same issue on the same truck. The VCT's have been replaced already and failed shortly thereafter. Thanks for showing the way you diagnose it; but can you explain to me exactly what you were doing, were you advancing/retarding the timing? I plan on doing the job myself when all the parts come in next week... I'm planning on setting aside 40 hours or so for this job as I'm a pilot not a mechanic. $4700 later, new phasers, timing chains, etc. my 2018 F150 V8 5.0 still has sounds like a diesel. Took it back, they did adjustment, sound is quieter. Now I am told the sound is from the valves, but that I can drive it forever making sure oil is always checkred and changed. (not a mechanic but I check and change on time). Is this true that I can continue to drive? I worry as I pull my travel trailer/home with this truck and being retired on fixed income is worrisome. Thank you!

My 19 Expedition 3.5 sounds very similar to this only after its warmed up. Dealer doesnt think its cam phasers (no cold rattle at all) and said it sounds like a lifter...Said they need to take the valve covers off to diagnose more...they weren't interested in watching this vid at all lol - thankfulky its still under powertrain warranty for another 3000 miles or so

seeing this same noise on the v8s in a lot of work trucks xl/xlt packages. One issue ive saw is from the engine not priming oil enough before it fires off (i imagine its this way due to auto start/stop).

Mines sounded like that since 2500 miles, dealer Blew it off as the HPFP and refused to do anything. Now at 45k, it's still doing it but louder and out of warranty. I have a suspicion if I took it back now they would magically find the phasers are gone, now that I'm paying out of pocket.

I'm from Saudi Arabia, got a used F150 2018 with 3.5 EB and it had 55k miles. Purchased from the US and imported to Saudi. Unfortunately, just noticed that I have the same issue and most probably the dealer here will not accept any repair under warranty as the vehicle is from the US even though the powertrain warranty still hasn't expired.

What will eventually happen to the engine if I don't get the phasers replaced?

I have this exact sound... replaced the phasers, chains, guids, tensioners... still makes the same exact sound... what did you do to fix this? Im thinking the lifters or roller followers?

My 2013 is doing the same. Wish I would have sold it for profit when the market was crazy high a year ago.

I took mine to banner ford in Monroe La they replaced 2 engine solenoids, camshaft, multiple tappets, multiple bolts and gaskets and 5455$ later it’s still making this tapping sound 🙃

Had a 2017 f150 3.5 EB that ran just like that! Took it to a dealer twice, they pushed back each time and refused to deal with me. Powertrain warranty expired at 60000 miles, I traded it in at 60001 miles.. I now drive a GM

Great diagnosis, now if Ford could have Techs like yourself assist their engineering department they might actually get somewhere. Do you guys see the chain guides shot or going on the 2nd gen 3.5's when well maintained?

Mines starting this bs too, also bought it with a bad cat. Dealer deleted the code. Next day came on.

I just changed my cam phasers and it’s making this sound lightly got the first 15-20 mins of idle then goes away warm
