It may be a while, but if they do get a redemption arc, I feel Shadow would be the best (reluctant) mentor to guide them to be better. The circumstances are a bit different, but he basically went through the same thing Surge and Kit did: Being made as a weapon for others’ goals, suffering an identity crisis due to amnesia, and going through a long journey to find himself. He’d be able to shut them down fast if they got in the mood to cause trouble. But, they still have a lot of baggage, so it’d be a while before they’d want redemption to actually seek it. I could see Team Dark being the most likely to help them discover their past. But there’s a chance that could make things better, or worse depending on what they’d discover.

I think what I like most about Sonic is how every rival character mirrors Sonic perfectly in some theme. Knuckles' punches to Sonic's kicks, Shadow and Sonic's mindsets, Sonic's natural speed vs Jet's Extreme Gear; Sonic vs Metal Sonic with nature vs technology, Blaze's sense of duty vs Sonic's sense of freedom and now we have Sonic vs Surge in the question of morality. Though Surge is still relatively new to this whole thing, she's the only 1 we've seen so far that makes it a point to challenge Sonic's way of doing things since she's a direct result of what happens. I think that's 1 of the best things about IDW Sonic is that we're more so getting a look at not only how the adventures and fights we see affect Sonic and friends, but how they affect the world and the citizens that inhabit that world while also displaying what makes Sonic and the others special in comparison to the rest of said world.

I like that she’s a tenrec. I think that’s clever given tenrec’s species mimic other species and there is a ‘hedgehog’ tenrec. Her designer was a pro.

Sega has IDW in a strangle hold with the cannon characters. Surge is an IDW created character, so IDW can write any story they want for her, therefore can bring out their full story telling ability. Sega told IDW they had to stick with game continuity for Sonic and friends, so Sega doesn't have to recon anything or include anything in the games.

Surge has served as a really good conduit for the dark themes of being an abuse victim and even showing the dark consequences of drug abuse with her use of the Dynamo Cage.

She feels for the lack of her own history and not really knowing what to do with herself, that she deserves to lash her anger out at a world that seemingly didnt care and forgot about her. But im also loving the small hints that she can and is considering changing for the better.

But from where she and Kit started, its going to be a long road to travel til she gets there.

I’m loving the one frame where she decides who she wants to be “We’re heroes!” With such hope and joy in her eyes. I think this is the first glimpse we’ve gotten into Surge and Kit’s real history. Surge being a Tenrec is also huge. Like she is faker of Sonic, I wouldn’t be surprised if Surge was a nobody with no home to go back to but looked up to sonic due to their biological similarities being a tenrec and hedgehog respectively, which probably lead her to Starline with false promises of being a hero like Sonic and well we know where that lead her if true. I think they’re gonna be a part of the main cast, Surge is too popular to not have be a Shadow and get a redemption arc, I just feel Surge will have to earn hers and prove to herself and others that she can be a hero. Maybe she will still fight Sonic for kicks but that might help him be less stagnant with his power. I wonder how Cyber powers from frontiers could also play a part in the future if Sonic still has them.

I love the difference in surge and kit's opinions on there counterparts. Surge "hates" sonic because justify it all she might, she is "programed" to. Kit mean while HATES tails because he lied to him, thus has an actual reason.

I mostly believe it’s because the good writing, and the fact that she’s interesting. she’s a total badass, and she needs a good nights rest, without Starline interrupting her.

My favorite part of the Riders arc had to be Surge getting genuine praise and being like "Wow. This actually feels nice. I want more of this. That's it! No more hired thugs, I'm gonna make sure that people _like_ me!" with her only being held back by Clutch's threats.
Surge has the potential to become a true hero, if she just has the right motivation.

I find Surge to be an attention loving person. She wants the glory of a hero but doesn't truly know what being a hero means. She's violent and mean-spirited, she wants to be loved but she needs to care about people in order to get that.
Kit on the other hand doesn't know how to be his own person.

I absolutely adore how they're a twisted copy of Sonic and Tails, they're so similar and yet so different. And their whole thing being about identity is so relatable and incredibly compelling.

What i love about Surge it's that her black spot on her face is a direct reference to Ashura the hedgehog glitch, and her overall fit, personality and mannerisms is a breath of fresh air and i hope Sega would make cameos of the comics into the mainstream games

The craziest thing is that this is still only Surge and Kit's beginning. They have a LOT more in store for these two lovable (and dangerous) goobers

There’s a comic called “Why we fight”. Displaying the dark side to Sonic and Eggman’s rivalry. They don’t kill each other despite being able to, even though people die or suffer in the crossfire. And despite all the chaos, they still perpetuate it. Because it’d be boring otherwise. Sonic, grimly agrees. This is why Surge wants to put them both in the dirt. And why Shadow usual aims to end Eggman. Not only does he besmirch Gerald’s memory further, he’s the antithesis of what Maria would want. Given the opportunity, these three would put Sonic’s villains in the ground.

When I first saw her character and studied it, she’s the Sonic’s world’s Jinx. If you dont know Jinx from Arcane, they have really similar personalities and I feel like their stories align in a way if studied both characters more closely.
