Made possible with the support of Ontario Creates.

Let's be honest, Metal isn't the most straightforward world to dive into. What do you mean all War Metal is Blackened Death, but not all Blackened Death is War Metal? In each episode, our host will break down a main genre of metal, providing historical context and hallmark sounds that define the style while providing some great bands to ease yourself into the waters. From there, they'll explore some of the key subgenres to entice you down the rabbit hole that is metal fandom. Banger has built its brand on opening up metal to the world and sharing our passion through enthusiasm and education. So let's get into…

BangerTV wants to create the next great series for our global metal community and we want your help! Introducing the Heavy Metal Democracy Project. Here’s how it works: we’ve created four series pilots which you can watch, vote, and comment on below. Once the votes are in, we’ll greenlight the pilot with the most votes into a full six-part series.

Honestly, Bathory was one of the first and is one of the most approachable sound and imagery wise.

Back in middle school, I typed Black Metal into YouTube and the first thing that came up was All Shall Fall by Immortal

Multiple paths led me to discover the Norwegian scene:
1) Immortal's "All Shall Fall" track
2) Bathory's "A Fine Day to Die"
3) Behemoth's "O Father..."

I like how you said “that racist vlogger we don’t talk about” and we all just collectively know who you’re talking about.

Immortal and Agalloch are what got me into Black Metal. The “epic ness” they created overcame my initial problems with the vocals.

Agalloch was how I got into Black Metal, perfect entry point with equal parts darkness, beauty, and sadness.

Drudkh got me into black metal. Their colorful nature themed artwork drew me in, and I enjoyed getting lulled to sleep by their mesmerizing organic sound.

I started listening to Black Metal with Dissection, Unanimated, Immortal, Sacramentum, Vinterland. Melodic black metal is my favourite.

15 years of being a metalhead and I'm just getting into black metal as my taste grows progressively heavier. I've heard a couple songs but never really got into it.
At last this very year I saw Samael live at a festival and realised that the true heart and grandeur of black metal is in the live performances, not the recordings!
I'm planning to go to a local black metal festival to check the genre out more thoroughly.
Checking the lineup introduced me to Insomnium and by extension Wintersun, two bands I'm really enjoying right now!
Not to mention the legendary tale of Varg Vikernes has been a point of fascination for me since my teens!

For me it was band like MGLA.. after I heard them the entire genre opened up to me... Now I listen to more black metal than Death.
