These tiny single celled creatures that live in ponds known as Halteria ciliates are “vivovores,” which means they can thrive on a virus only diet as their energy source.

During laboratory experiments, each microbe ate between 10,000 and 1 million viruses per day but if put into the wild, they could potentially devour trillions per day.
