My sister once told my mom she’d call CPS over some banal reason and she responded “call them. They’ll come and take you to a foster home, probably split you and your siblings up, and you can sleep in bunk beds with 5 other kids to a room.” That was the last time my sister used that tactic

I became a single father after 17 years of marriage. My sons mother, due to the lousy healthcare system died from cancer. Two weeks after the funeral sitting at the kitchen. How am I going to raise a 7 and 11 year old sons that were hurt because their mother died. Then it dawned on me. Marine Corp barracks. I screamed down the hall at the boys and to got into the living room. Told them I loved them, I can't run this house alone, you're going to have have learn some new skills like washing cloths, dishes and cooking. 10 years later, the boys took me out on Mother's Day. I was given a Mother's Day Card. "Happy Mother's Day, Dad. Mom would be proud." The youngest turned down three full ride college scholarships enlisted in the military, oldest now runs a family business and side hustles. Tough Love never hurt any kid.

My wife is a middle school teacher and was suspended- because she took a cell phone away from a child- during a mid-term exam. Board ruled, that she was " derelict" in her duty to remove the connection between the 12 yr old and her mother. As it turned out- ... the mother was asking the child ( during her exam), what she wanted for dinner that night.

I was a teen when cell phones started proliferating, and we weren’t allowed to have them in class. And those were just plain Nokia phones that do nothing but make phone calls.

Restricting smart phones in school is a no-brainer.

Please ban smart phones in all schools.

Abigail Shrier is correct about the 15 - 22 year old kids being brought up without skills to survive - and their parents are to blame!

If I had called child services on my mom as a kid she would have told then to take me away.

Volunteered in an elementary school for 4 months.

It's *insane* to allow phones in classrooms period.

Kids distract each other enough as it is, plus they have laptops in classes already!

We made it through all of school w/o phones.
If your parents need to reach you, they can call the office!

I graduated from high school 20 years ago and the whole class had cell-phones. We had to leave them in our lockers. Seems like a no brainer and not something you need to pass a law about.

This was a great Overtime. Not overly political, guests weren't talking over each other... just very civil, of which we could use more.

I was a high school teacher up until 2 years ago. I had a clear plastic shoe organizer hanging in my classroom. Students put their phones in this when they came in to the room and grabbed it when they left. This worked for the most part. They could still see their phone and knew they'd be reunited shortly. Eventually this idea caught on and many colleagues starting doing the same.

When I was a kid - we were given bicycles - skateboards - mini bikes - ball gloves a ball and a bat - a basketball - a fishing pole - a kickball and we went outside. I didn't even know what a bicycle helmet was until I was middle aged. I certainly never wore one - and I don't even think they were being manufactured when I was a kid. I walked to and from school - even in winter ( up north ) by myself etc . . We stayed out until dark and sometimes later than that. My Mom NEVER knew where I was. And this was all NORMAL.

Parents used to tell kids go out and play. now they just expect nothing from them.

My kids go to a K-12 charter school where phones (and smart watches) have always been banned (phones are allowed to be in their locker for use before and after school) and they've never complained about it because it is normal for them. This should be the norm everywhere.

Phones have been banned in schools in France for years, in most of Canada for a while... It's beneficial in every way.
