Ancient Pella archaeological site. Second capital of Macedonian State.
Ancient Pella was a small coastal town located near the Thermaikos Gulf. It was chosen as the capital of the Macedonian State by King Archelaos or Amyntas III at the end of the fifth century BC. It replaced the former capital,Aigai ,because its location was ideal due to the fertility of the lands nearby. Thermaikos Gulf also facilitated transport and commerce and seemed attractive to the Macedonian rulers. It developed greatly under Philip II and Cassander. Alexander the Great, the king of the Macedonian State and Philip II's son, was born there.
