It took me probably 2 years to sharpen a knife this good. What took me forever to understand is proper burr removal. If I would have learned that early on I could have probably easily taken a year off my learning curve. Jared Neeves is the best teacher on YouTube and outdoor 55. I've learned so much from watching both of these guys videos

The S cut thru the paper towel was crazy 😬

I had Neeves sharpen two of my knives, he did the best job. I’ve since learned how to get it close to his sharpness but he is the Master for a reason. ❤️

Been following you for quite a while now, you bring the best that there is! Thank you!! 😮

Great but what purpose does that much sharpness serve besides making it easier to receive edge damage and get dull quicker?

He’s 100% correct. I have that and many other whetstones. Not to be confused with “wet stones” diamond bonded are without a doubt the way to go😊

Agreed. Diamond stones are the way to go. About five years ago it occurred to me that the old Swiss Army knife I got as a kid was essentially a folding butter knife, and I had no idea what to do about it. I decided to learn how to sharpen knives, to really make a study of it, and after a lot of practice and a lot of failure, today I'll put my freehand skills up against any locking bracket or fixed angle set up. And despite trying every type of stone I could find, I always came back to the bonded diamonds. They're they only stones that can really handle the latest generation of super steels. Yes, a good water stone can put an nice edge on 154CM or even S35VN if you're patient and very precise with the angle, but steels loke S90V, M398, or even Magnacut and the 20CV/204P/M390 group really need the diamonds. And even then it takes a while: I wore out a coarse DMT stone keeping S110V PM2 razor sharp. I can't wait to get my hands on a Spyderco Sage in Rex 121.

I use 1095 and other carbons steel simply due to that fact that they get super duper sharp on a whetstone and are easy to maintain

One of the biggest rabbit holes you can go down is peoples opinions on how to properly sharpen blades

Sure its sharp but does it hold up under real work? My knives go through so much abuse theyre rarely sharp enough to open a letter but they maintain an edge that still gets work done

Been a fan of bonded diamond stones for around 15-16 years or so. My dad was a glass blower working with quartz for the microchip industry. Quartz is really hard and they had bonded diamond stones for touching up the edges (at least in Russia they did). I remember seeing this cool little (1.5"x4") dual sided stone in an old leather pouch he had in his garage and asked him what it was. He told me its something he brought over with him when we came to the States and after lots of begging, he gave it to me.
I was amazed by how much sharper i was able to get my edge on my Endura 3 (iirc. Saber grind and stainless steel handle). I used it as my finishing stone because it was on the finer side (my guess is 10-20 micron on one and 3-7 on the other). It was an older bonded stone, the binder was on the softer side so you had to be careful with it. It also had a smell to it and glazed pretty fast. But it was still a great finishing and touch up stone that gave me sharp and aggressive edges.
Glad to see the advancements in the stones since. I haven't tried all if them by my favorite are Edge pro diamond matrix stones.

Keep in mind that a whetstone is a stone used to whet, so any diamond sharpening stones are also whetstones.

What is the knife in the opening? Gorgeous!

Whetstones are a great sharpening tool, especially for knives made out of lower quality steel like your standard knives or hunting knives and the like. However bonded diamond is absolutely the way to go if you want a razor edge on a higher quality blade. For some this is unnecessary since for almost any practical application a razor edge isn't needed. But for those that do want that razor edge, and have the time and patience, diamond bonded is a must! Also make sure to use a leather strop or something similar to help remove the burr for any beginners out there. This helps with either so make sure not to skip when sharpening!

I’m confident that I’ve never had a knife nearly as sharp as what’s demonstrated here. I freehand blades on some DMT plates and have never tried to cut a piece of paper. The blades seem pretty sharp to me and I have no interest in agonizing over how sharp they really are. I’ve come close to buying a KME, Wicked Edge or TSPROF system, but I never follow through and do it. I do appreciate the videos sir. 👍🏻

Which companies do you recommend to buy the bonded diamond stones from?

Good chosera stones can sharpen anything too. I have both diamond and chosera. They both work for any of the fancy steels I have.

Diamond is a little faster though. But the chosera gives a way nicer polish.

Diamond are legit. However, personally, it's all about choosing the best cutting medium for your purpose. SV30 gets Diamond. D2 gets an oil stone. My razor gets a high-quality waterstone. A good hack for Diamond stones is Simple Green. It was originally made to be a machinist cutting oil and works great for that purpose as it also bunches and repels metal shavings, leading to less clogging and easier clean up.

I have achieved this level of sharpness on wet stones and personally I prefer them. With the proper edge geometry and about 15 minutes you can whittle a hair no issue with a 1000 grit stone free hand. That being said I do not have a ton of experience on diamond sharpeners so it may provide better result. For beginners to intermediate sharpening I would save the money and buy a lansky sharpening kit and a decent strop and compound.

What brand of diamond stones do you recommend? And is there any angle guides that I should get with it? I’m new to knife sharpening and I don’t know hot to free hand yet.
