F-150 Lightning review: so fast, so slow

Earlier this year, Ford began shipping the F-150 Lightning, its first electric pickup truck and arguably the most important EV to be released this year. The Verge’s editor-in-chief Nilay Patel got a chance to test out the Lightning for a few days, and came away with a lot of thoughts about the drive quality, the acceleration, the software, EV charging, and — of course — the truck stuff. The F-150 Lightning will likely help accelerate EV adoption across the country — if Ford can actually get enough of them to customers.

How much are you willing to pay for the F-150 Lightning?

I am a software developer, I encourage any customers of electronics to treat slow responding UI as bugs. Report them as bugs, demand better. Nothing (to close approximation) should be slow on modern computers.

I have to say, I like this approach to a car review (coming from a gear head too). If the auto CEO’s are touting their vehicles as tech products, then calling their bluff and reviewing it as such is an interesting and refreshing approach to see where we really are now and will be in the future.

You can see the immaturity of car manufacturers in relation to software when the CEO says “we have more lines of code than a smartphone”. In software development, having less lines of code is actually a good thing. Too much lines of code are a solid sign of code smell. Of course, you don’t have to smell the amount of lines to know something is wrong when basic interface manipulations make the entire system struggle.

To clarify, the Pro and XLT trims of the lightning also come standard with the landscape 12 inch infotainment screen with sync4. Only the lariat and platinum Lightning come with the 15 inch portrait screen with sync4a

Loved the outdoor shots in the woods, such a nice change from all the studio-based videos!

New US government incentive to buy an EV: $7500
Ford: Raises price of F150 Lightning by $8500

I LOVE your tech / phone take on this review! Seen all the other "car reviews" but appreciated the commentary on the screen especially

Not all Lightnings have the 15in Sync 4a screen. Lower trims still have the 12in Sync 4 screen.

I have the XLT Lightning and those actually do come with the excellent 12 inch screen and actual PHYSICAL BUTTONS like a regular F150. It’s felt very snappy too albeit not as good as Tesla.

Same UI issues on the Ford Mustang Mach-E…. Ford really needs to hire proper UI developers

Great review of the software. I've not seen anyone else commenting on its slowness and the missed opportunity for screen real estate. Hopefully something that can be fixed!

The shifter motor must be the same one they use for their retractible wing mirrors. That sound and motion was exactly the same as the wing mirrors on my 2012 Focus!

Not all trims of Lightning have big portrait screen, the pro and xlt have the same screen the regular f150 does with physical buttons
