Ukraine's Silent Attack Boat

Haven't seen this combat kayak in action yet, maybe we'll get some footage soon. We've also got a Russian 2S9 Nona which is sort of a mix between a bunch of different systems and unlike anything in the US arsenal. Tank ditches might look simple but they're pretty effective and we've got new footage out of Ukraine showing just how they work.

Reminds me of the Chinese Gyrocopter that was on Task and Purpose on youtube last week. Maybe they serve the same purpose: Both the Combat Kayak and the Gyrocopter are manned systems. If the jamming and electronic warfare is very heavy, you can just turn off your radios get silent and sneak in to have a look. You write down what you see on a piece of rainproof paper and come back to base undetected. Nobody can hack or jam a piece of paper. The weapons are just there for you to sell your life dearly if you do get detected.

As someone who has kayaked and canoed for years, my goodness does that look unstable. That gun up high is something else. I am not sure if that will be put into actual use or just meant to distract.

I’m surprised they don’t put outriggers onto the kayak for stability, both when moving and firing since the AGL is far from the center of gravity.

Pro: It is completely silent for all intents.
Con: If the enemy sees you, you're dead.

I'm guessing it's a T-72 that couldn't otherwise be fully repaired being sent in to see if the ditch was built correctly or if they could just send a battalion of other tanks through that area. You can see the driver near the tree-line having jumped out and walking back after seeing the result.

It was an unmanned tank testing the ditch, in the tree line at top of screen you can see the crew. They found out that they can't get through, no artillery fired on it but more importantly the ditch has been filled so you drive over the sacrificed BMP. Good drills if you ask me!

Great video as always, thx

For the 2S9
The 2S9 is a russian 120mm mobile mortar system from the 80's and 90's. The role it carries can indeed be furfilled by other systems wich can probably outrange and outgun the 2S9.

But the 2S9 has a reason to it why it exists, and that reason is the russian airborne, the VDV.

When you drop inside enemy territory and capture mabye one or two villages you dont have a whole arterilly battalion behind you, its just you as part of the vdv and your vehicles.

This system can furfil the needs for a mobile, airdropable mortar system for the VDV.

So in conclusion the 2S9 may be outranged and outgunned by other russian systems, it still furfils a big role in firesupport in its own mission set/goals with the VDV

IT was unmanned as the crew jump out as it crossed the open field. Plus i think they where testing if the field was mined and if artillery was around. Also it was suggested that the BMP could be used to act like a bridge over the tank ditch, with other vehicle's able to drive over it. If that was the case am sure they send a couple more to make more crossings and to make sure that one was not just lucky in that it did not hit a mine.

So Battle Pajamas, Cammie Jammies, or Warrior Woolies?

Also, a pack of Combat Kayaks and you are talking Viking raids

Preston your APC stuck in the ditch is the lone vehicle in the clip that start at 6 min 48 sec, if you look near the tree line you can see the crew of the APC. It was done as a test, at no point did it hit a mine or was fired at, where are the Russians ?. Now it could be used as a bridge over the ditch

Remote control tank. Sent to prove path but also possibly to place a base for an earthen bridge to be hastily built during an assault. They might run more things into the ditch. Extreme but not a dumb idea.

The tank driver jumps out in the field and runs off to the tree line. Possibly testing to see if they can breach the tank ditch

Regarding the 2S9, there is also the 2S31 Vena which is similar but larger, and the 2S34 Khosta which is a 2S1 SPG modified to use the 120mm gun/mortar.

Another problem (and one of the reasons deck guns disappeared from submarines) is that kayaks roll A LOT! It's going to be difficult hitting a target area at long or even medium range.

WW2 anti tank ditches were used to great effect by the Soviets and Germans both. And to this end tanks are still basically the same 80 yrs. later so the use of the anti tank ditch makes perfect sense as a part of layered anti tanks defense. And by far the cheapest.

2C9 is a 120mm mortar based on a transport that can be dropped from a helicopter or airplane. But which charges like a cannon.
2C23 is a 120mm mortar based on an 8x8 armored personnel carrier.
2C 31 is a 120mm mortar based on the BMP 3.
2C34 is a 120mm mortar based on a tracked armored personnel carrier.
The 152mm howitzer shoots from 4 miles to 19 miles.
The 120mm mortar fires from 500 yards to 4.5 miles. Actively rocket projectiles up to 8 miles.
That is, the mortar covers that empty area of howitzers.
The Russian military does not like light 105mm and 122mm howitzers. They like simplification and unification. (it's not always smart) This makes it easier for them to plan operations and build logistics.

Operation Frankton WWII used kayaks to great effect.

In December 1942, 10 Marines travelled by kayaks and sank 5 ships in Bordeaux harbour. Operation Frankton, as seen in the movie Cockleshell Heroes. Maybe the Ukrainians watch old movies? If they do, is "Where Eagles Dare next?
